Bakersfield Stumbles in Opener at UCSB

Santa Barbara, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield grabbed an early lead thanks to RBI singles from Tyler Jorgensen and Aaron Casillas, but UC Santa Barbara answered with three runs in the third to take game one of a four-game Big West Conference series, 5-2, on Friday evening.

"Everything is magnified in close games and we blinked twice," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "We competed well and hit balls hard all night, but didn't get the timely hit and came up a little short."

The Roadrunners pounded out nine hits against Gaucho ace Michael McGreevy, a potential first-round selection in this summer's MLB Draft.

Jacen Roberson finished 3-for-4 with a triple and scored on Jorgensen's game-tying single in the fourth to lead the `Runner attack.

Bakersfield took the lead three batters later when Casillas chopped a single through the left-side to score Jorgensen from second base, but UCSB would score four unanswered over the next two innings to take game one.

McGreevy tossed into the eighth inning to earn the win, while Bakersfield starter Noah Cordova took the loss scattering eight hits in four innings of work.

Kellen O'Connor and Andrew Ciandro pitched four innings of scoreless relief for CSUB.

The two teams will square off in a double header on Saturday, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Senior right-handers Aaron Charles and Ethan Skuija are scheduled to pitch for the Roadrunners.

How it Happened:
• Jordan Sprinkle doubled down the line in left with one out in the third and came around to score on a double by Zach Rodriguez for the games' first run.
• The `Runners answered with two runs of their own in the top of the fourth. Roberson started the rally with a one out triple, ahead of singles from Jorgensen, Kobe Silva and Casillas. Jorgensen and Casillas drove in single runs for Bakersfield to make it 2-1.
• The Gauchos answered with back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the frame. First-baseman Kyle Johnson's two-bagger chased home McClain O'Connor to tie the game at two.
• USCB stretched their lead to 5-2 in the fifth. Sprinkle led off the inning with a long home run to left field to give the Gauchos the lead. A second run would score on an error before Christian Kirtley tacked on a sacrifice fly.

Notable:
• Roberson's three-hit performance was his ninth multi-hit effort of the season and the fourth time he's connected for three or more base hits in 2021.
• Bakersfield's bullpen continued its torrid pace with four scoreless innings of relief. Over the past 13 games, `Runner relievers have thrown 80.1 and allowed just 20 earned runs for a 2.24 ERA in that span.
• The `Runners fall to 20-20 and sit at .500 for the first time since a 7-1 win over UC Riverside on Mar. 20th.
