Bakersfield Splits Double Header with #20 UC Irvine

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSU Bakersfield scored four times in the first inning and never looked back winning game two, 11-9, and splitting a double header with #20 UC Irvine at Hardt Field on Saturday. Three Roadrunners had three-hit days, as CSUB knocked off a ranked opponent for the first time since the 2018 season and snapped the Anteaters nine-game winning streak in the process. UCI won the opener, 2-1, and leads the series heading into Sunday's finale.

"It's always nice to beat a quality ball club," said CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard. "UCI is an exceptional team and we had to play two different types of ball games today. We swung the bat well and that approach led to our success in game two."

Bakersfield scored a single run in the third on Jacen Roberson's RBI single to take an early lead in the opener, but the Anteaters scored once in the fourth and once in the fifth to grab the win.

UCI starter Nick Pinto held the `Runners to seven hits in 7.2 innings pitched and allowed just a single unearned run to pick up his sixth win of the season.

For Bakersfield, Aaron Charles, Kellen O'Connor and Jack Lee combined to allow two runs, one earned, and just seven hits to go with eight strikeouts for CSUB.

Ethan Skuija picked up the win in game two, scattering eight hits over six innings and striking out three.

Nick Grossman had five hits in seven at bats on the day, while Kobe Silva finished 4-for-6.

Aaron Casillas led the `Runners with a career-high five RBI.

Jo Stevens started at third in game two and was 3-for-4 with three RBI. Grossman, Casillas and Silva also had three hits in the nightcap.

The same two teams will meet again in tomorrow's series finale, set for 1:00 p.m. Roman Angelo will get the ball for CSUB in a showdown with Irvine right-hander Peter Van Loon.

How it Happened – Game 1:
• The `Runners grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third. Cody Holtz reached on a one out error, moved to second on Evan Berkey's single up the middle and scored when Jacen Roberson grounded one through the box to pick up an RBI.
• UCI answered with two outs in the top of the fourth. Luke Spillane singled to center and scored six pitches later on Connor McGuire's double into the left-center field gap, tying the score at one.
• The Anteaters scored the game winning run in the fifth. Nathan Church singled up the middle with one out in the frame, before advancing to third on a failed pick-off throw and scoring on Mike Peabody's third base hit of the afternoon.

How it Happened – Game 2:
• Bakersfield grabbed an early lead in game two as well, this time scoring four times in the bottom of the first inning. Silva opened the scoring with an RBI single to center. Grossman followed with a run-scoring double before Casillas capped the scoring with his two-run single through the left-side.
• The first-five Anteaters reached via a walk, double, double, single, single and an error in the top of the second but managed just one run. Left-fielder Luke Spillane doubled in Dillon Tatum to put Irvine on the board and make it 4-1.
• Casillas and Stevens each struck for two-run singles in the third, pushing CSUB's lead to 8-1.
• Connor McGuire scored on Jake Palmer's single to make it 8-2 in the top of the fourth.
• Thomas McCaffrey scored on a wild pitch in the sixth pulling UCI within 8-3.
• Stevens made it 9-3 when he led off the bottom of the sixth with a single and scored on a UCI wild pitch.
• The `Runners stretched their lead to 11-3 in the seventh on RBI singles from Casillas and Stevens.
• Church singled in a run in the eighth and Peabody followed with a three-run blast over the right field fence. Spillane added a two-run single later in the inning to make it 11-9.

Notable:
• Starter Aaron Charles fanned five in 4.1 innings, raising his career total to 94. He's just six strikeouts shy of the century mark with one start left in the regular season. Fellow right-hander Roman Angelo needs just three strikeouts on Sunday to hit 100 for his career.
• CSUB, which entered the weekend first in the Big West, and 19th in the country, in double plays per game turned four more in today's double header and now boast 38 in 38 games this season.
Jack Lee retired both batters he faced for his fourth save of the season.
• The `Runners 8-2 win was the team's first over a ranked opponent since a 4-0 win over #23 UNLV on Mar. 6, 2018.
