Bakersfield Drops Finale with CSUN

Bakersfield, Calif. – CSUN's Blaine Traxel threw a complete game four-hitter as the Matadors beat CSU Bakersfield, Sunday, to sweep a four-game Big West series at Hardt Field. The Roadrunners fell to 14-13 overall and 11-9 in conference play and remain in third place alongside Cal State Fullerton.

Roman Angelo threw seven strong innings for CSUB, allowing just three hits and three earned runs while striking out four. He retired the final 13 batters he faced.

Nick Salas, Jacen Roberson, Tyler Jorgensen and Aaron Casillas all singled, with Jorgensen scoring Bakersfield's lone run.

The `Runners managed just one hit off of Traxel after the second inning.

CSUB wraps up an eight-game home stand with a four-game set against Cal Poly, beginning next Friday at 3:00 p.m.

How It Happened:
• CSUN raced out to an early lead for the fourth straight game, using two hits and an error to score twice in the top of the first. Jose Ruiz picked up an RBI when he reached on an error, and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from first baseman Ryan Ball.
• Jorgensen singled to lead off the bottom of the second and came around to score thanks to two CSUN errors in the frame.
• Denzel Clarke made it 4-1 CSUN when he belted a two-run shot deep over the fence in left.
• Two batters after Clarke's home run, shortstop Brandon Bohning walked with two outs in the top of the third. The next 33 hitters would be retired before CSUB reliever Jack Lee walked the third Matador he faced in the eighth.
• Catcher Cody Holtz came inches from pulling CSUB within 4-3 in the 8th, when his towering fly ball down the line in left was ruled just left of the foul pole.
• CSUN tacked on one final run in the top of the ninth, when Robert Bullard walked, stole second and third, and raced home on a soft pop-fly over Morrissey's shoulder in shallow right.

Notable:
• Jorgensen extended his on-base streak to 24 games and is now tied for 8th all time at CSUB.
• Berkey saw his 17-game hitting streak snapped and finished 0-for-4.
• Angelo retired the final 13 batters he faced, lasting a season best 7.0 innings.
• CSUB was swept in a four-game series for the first time since Feb. 23-25, 2018, when the `Runners dropped four-straight at Cal.

Quotable:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On being swept at home…
"We certainly didn't play a very good series. What we need to do now is get right back to the drawing board and get back to our strengths, which are training hard and practicing well so that we take offensive approaches, pitch and play and play defense the way we know how."
