Roadrunners Rusty in Series Opening Loss

Bakersfield, Calif. – Evan Berkey, Eric Charles and Nick Grossman each had a pair of hits, but CSU Bakersfield fell to visiting UC Davis, 5-0, in the opener of a four-game Big West Conference series at Hardt Field. The Roadrunners were playing for the first time since their 3-1 series win over UC Riverside, after missing the past two weeks due to university health and safety protocols.

Bakersfield pitchers Art Joven, Davonte Butler and Noah Cordova held the Aggies to just five hits, but six walks and four CSUB errors led to five unearned UC Davis runs.

The `Runners put the lead-off hitter on base in each of the fifth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings, but couldn't string enough hits together to prevent the shutout. Bakersfield was blanked for the first time since a 6-0 loss to California Baptist on Apr. 13, 2019.

UC Davis' Jake Spillane picked up his second win of the season, striking out five `Runners over six strong innings of work.

Joven suffered his first loss of the season, allowing four runs, all unearned.

The `Runners made a number of loud outs in the later innings. Eric Charles and Nick Grossman each lost multiple late-inning RBI when their sharp line drives to right field we're run down on the warning track by UCD's Isaiah Verrett.

The two teams will square off in a double header Saturday afternoon, with game one scheduled for noon.

How it Happened:
Top 3 | The Aggies grabbed the game's first run in the top of the third inning when Nick Iverson doubled down the line in right field and scored on a sacrifice fly from third baseman Jalen Smith. Smith would finish 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI.
Top 4 | UCD threatened again in the fourth, but Joven, Bakersfield's starting pitcher, posted back-to-back strike outs of Kyler Arenado and Isaiah Verrett to strand two Aggies in scoring position.
Top 5 | UC Davis scored three times in the fifth despite the benefit of just two hits. Smith led off the inning with a single through the left-side, before scoring when DH Jake Brandel reached on an error. Brandel would score on a wild pitch before Conner Longrie added a two-out RBI single.
Top 9 | The Aggies plated an insurance run in the ninth, when Smith scored on a sacrifice fly by Michael Campagna.

Notable:
• Senior infielder Daniel Carrizosa made the 100th start of his career Friday.
• Reliever Davonte Butler fanned right fielder Isaiah Verrett in the sixth for the 100th strikeout of his CSUB career.
Tyler Jorgensen singled in the eighth inning, finishing 1-for-4 and extending his hitting streak to nine games.
Evan Berkey, Nick Grossman and Jacen Roberson stretched hitting streaks to three games.
• Catcher Angel Saldivar reached base for the seventh-straight game when he was hit by a pitch to lead off the fifth inning.
• The Roadrunners welcomed a limited number of CSUB students and student-athlete family members to Hardt Field for the first time this season. One hundred and seven fans we're in attendance for the series opener.

Quotable:

Head Coach Jeremy Beard on his team's performance…
"We didn't play our brand of aggressive baseball, we walked six and didn't anticipate plays very well on defense. You can't expect to win too many games when you play like that. The best thing we can do is flush today and get onto the next game as soon as we can."

On rebounding for the rest of the series…
"The biggest key is to stay positive and stay together. Our kids have gone through a lot to get to this stage of the year and I'm proud of their efforts this season. We have a great group and I expect that they'll come out tomorrow and put together a much better ballgame."
