Roberson Hits for the Cycle in Game Two, `Runners Split Double Header with UC Davis

Bakersfield, Calif. – Jacen Roberson hit for the first cycle in CSU Bakersfield baseball history to key a 14-4 game two win, as the Roadrunners battled back for a split of Saturday's double header with visiting UC Davis.

CSUB pounded out 14 hits in the nightcap to snap a two-game losing streak and put themselves in position for a series split on Sunday.

Roberson picked up for of those hits, including his second home run of the day and the first grand slam of his Bakersfield career. He scored three times and drove in six of the `Runners 14 game-two runs.

The CSUB sophomore also homered in a 9-7 game one loss, a two-run homer that gave him eight RBI for the day.

Senior Evan Berkey also homered twice on the day. Berkey hit a two-run homer in the ninth inning of the early game, before driving a fastball high off the scoreboard in left field in the double header finale.

Cody Holtz, Eric Charles, Jashia Morrissey and Tyler Jorgensen all had three hits on the day as Bakersfield hit .347 in the double header.

Jorgensen had at least one hit in each game, extending his current hitting streak to 11 games.

UCD scored six times in the fifth inning of game one en route to their 9-7 victory. Starting pitcher Kaden Riccomini worked 6.1 innings, scattering nine hits and allowing four earned runs to pick up the win.

Bakersfield jumped on the Aggies early in game two, scoring twice in the first, five times in the second and two more times in the third to race out to a 9-0 advantage.

UCD clawed to within 9-4, before Roberson's RBI triple and Berkey's two-run bomb put the game out of reach.

The `Runners scored twice more in the eighth invoking the Big West's 10-run, double header mercy rule.

Andrew Ciandro pitched 3.1 innings in relief of starter Ethan Skuija to earn the win. He scattered six hits but struck out a pair and did not allow a run over his longest outing of the season.

Bakersfield will attempt to salvage a series split in Sunday's finale with UC Davis. Roman Angelo will take the hill for CSUB, with first-pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.

GAME ONE - HOW IT HAPPENED:
• The Aggies scored twice on two walks, two doubles and a wild pitch to take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Kyler Arenado drove in the first UCD run with a ground rule double down the line in left and Colton Evans crossed the plate three batters later on a wild pitch.
• Bakersfield answered in the bottom half after Jorgensen led off with a double and came across on Nick Grossman's RBI ground out.
• CSUB took the lead in the third, when Roberson connected for his second home run of the season to make it 3-2. Charles scored on the play after beating out an infield single to second.
• Seven hits and a sacrifice fly keyed a six run UC Davis fifth. The Aggies received RBI from Spencer Gedestad, Isaiah Verrett, Colton Evans, Kyler Arenado, Nick Iverson and Jalen Smith.
• Holtz led off the seventh with a ringing double to right-center field and pulled CSUB within, 8-4, when he scored on a throwing error by UCD's Kyler Arenado.
• Bakersfield inched a run closer in the eighth, when Holtz grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to score Jorgensen.
• UC Davis added an insurance run in the ninth on an RBI single from Cooper Morrison,
• Berkey belted his second home run of the season in the bottom of the ninth, a two-run homer to make it 9-7.

GAME 2 – HOW IT HAPPENED:
• Charles started a one-out, first-inning rally when he walked and advanced to third on a double by Roberson. Berkey and Jorgensen followed with RBI ground outs to give the `Runners and early 2-0 lead.
• Bakersfield scored five times in the second, with the big blow a Roberson grand slam high over the right-center field fence. Nick Salas also scored in the inning following a UCD error.
• CSUB made it 9-0 in the bottom half of the third on an RBI double from Aaron Casillas and an RBI single off the bat of Morrissey.
• UC Davis broke through in the fourth with three runs of their own. Spencer Gedestad opened the frame with a long home run off the batter's eye in straight away center field, and two more runs came around to score on a Colton Evans single to left field.
• Kyler Arenado's doubled to right center to score designated hitter Jake Brandel in the fifth.
• Davis nearly scored again in the sixth, but Grossman put a hard charge on a Jake Brandel base hit and came up firing to cut down Nick Iverson at the plate and end the inning.
• CSUB scored three times in the bottom of the sixth. Roberson doubled home Charles to make it 10-4, and then scored on Berkey's second home run of the day, a towering shot, high off the scoreboard in straight-away left.
• Roberson completed his cycle with a single off the glove of UC Davis pitcher Ryan Rodriguez to score catcher Angel Saldivar, who had opened the inning with a double. Three pitches later Jorgensen's single to left field plated Charles with the game-ending run.

NOTABLE:
• In addition to hitting the first cycle in CSUB history, Roberson became just the third `Runner to drive in at least six runs in a single game. Chance Gusbeth drove in a school record seven runs in a win over Northern Colorado on May. 3, 2014.
• Roberson's game-two grand slam was CSUB's second home run with the bases loaded this season.
• Jorgensen extended his hitting streak to eleven games and collected his ninth multi-hit game of the season with a 2-for-5 effort in game two. His current hitting streak matches a career high set last season.
• Charles and Holtz each had three hits in the opener. It was the fourth three-hit outing of Charles' career and the first for Holtz.
• Ciandro's win was the third of his career and his first since Apr. 20, 2019, when he worked 1.1 perfect innings against Northern Colorado.

QUOTABLE:
Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On how the team has responded to adversity…
"Our team does a great job of playing together and fighting for momentum. It's not always easy to get the momentum on your side, but once you do it can be hard to lose. We've faced some adversity, but the team got back up and fought today. That's all we ask of them; to get back up when they're down."

On Andrew Ciandro's strong outing in relief…
"Ciandro was excellent today and showed a lot of maturity. He's worked incredibly hard at his craft to get to where he is right now and I'm proud of his attention to detail. He located well today, was very efficient and put away hitters once he got ahead in counts."

On the offense returning to form…
"We haven't seen much live pitching over the last couple of weeks, but guys adjusted today and got back to good swing planes. I thought we hit balls hard all day, even in game one when we didn't find many holes. It was great to see a number of guys get hot."

Centerfielder Jacen Roberson
On the team's confidence after a 14-4 win…
"I think we struggled with timing and confidence after the long layoff, but we used today's 40-minute break to remind ourselves we're a very good baseball team. We knew out bats could wake up at any moment and they did. We scored 14 runs and we showed that we can really hit the ball."

On hitting for the cycle…
"I've never even thought about hitting for the cycle. It's one of those things that takes a little luck, and a lot went right for me today. It was fun."

Designated Hitter Evan Berkey
On the importance of earning a split…
"This win was so important. A lot of teams might get down after dropping the first two and end up losing three or four, but the best thing about our club is that when we get knocked down, we get back up right away. You can knock us down, but you can't keep us down."

On the team's offensive output…
"We saw the ball well today and we didn't try to do too much. (We) kept our approaches simple today and let the velocity of the ball do most of the work."
