Jorgensen Walks-Off in Game Two, `Runners Split Double Header with Pacific

Bakersfield, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield baseball team split a double header with Pacific on Saturday, losing the opener 8-5, before bouncing back to win game two, 10-9. Senior Tyler Jorgensen had five hits on the day, including a walk-off two-run home run to give the Roadrunners the game two victory.

The `Runners raced out to a 6-0 lead in game two, but Pacific chipped away, eventually coming all the way back to take a 9-8 lead in the top half of the ninth. Bakersfield would not go quietly.

Freshman Jashia Morrissey led off the bottom of the ninth with a four-pitch walk, setting the stage for Jorgensen's heroics two batters later.

Freshman Jack Lee earned the win in his first career appearance. Lee entered in the eighth and stifled a Tiger rally when he struck out the first two batters he faced to end the threat.

Reliever Nick Swanson took the loss for Pacific, who out hit CSUB 12-11 in the nightcap.

Game one also went to the ninth before being decided. Pacific scored nine runs in the top half of the frame to snap a 3-3 tie and put themselves in position for the win. CSUB scored twice in the bottom half of the ninth, but got no closer.

Art Joven started game one for the `Runners, pitching well and scattering seven hits, while striking out five over 5.2 innings.

CJ Rivers' clutch double evened the score at three in the bottom of the seventh.

Jorgensen is 8-for-11 in the Pacific series, and was just a triple short of the cycle in game three.

Aaron Casilas was 2-for-4 in game two, while Morrissey drove in the first two runs of his CSUB career.

Bakersfield will look to even the series Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 1:00 PM.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE…

* The `Runners jumped on top early, when three straight reached with one away in the top of the first. Tyler Jorgensen drove his fourth-hit of the series to left-center field chasing Jashia Morrissey home for the game's first run. Pacific starter Hunter Hayes escaped further damage when he induced a double play ball off the bat of Cody Holtz.
* Pacific tied the game in the top of the fifth. Right fielder Zach Patterson chopped a double down the left-field line to lead off the inning, before advancing to third on a ground out and scoring on Wyatt Hoffman's sacrifice fly to right.
* The Tigers tacked on two more in the sixth, when left-fielder Charles Middleton connected for a towering two-run home run to left. Joven retired two of the next three batters he faced, before giving way to Noah Cordova with a runner on first. He finished his first Hardt Field outing allowing three earned on seven hits, while striking out five in 5.2 innings of work.
* CJ Rivers pulled the `Runners even in the bottom of the seventh, with a pinch-hit, two-out, two-strike double into the right-center field gap. Cody Holtz and Nick Grossman scored, after leading off the inning with consecutive walks.
* Pacific took control with five runs in the top of the ninth inning, including four-consecutive singles against Roadrunner reliever Kellen O'Conner.
* Two hits and an error pulled CSUB within 8-5, but that was as close as they'd get. Freshman Kyle Barileau picked up his first career hit on a single to the left-side to drive in Bakersfield's fifth run.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO…

* For the second straight game, CSUB scored in the bottom of the first inning. This time Evan Berkey started the rally with a lead-off walk and a stolen base. He came around to score on an RBI single to left-center off the bat of Tyler Jorgensen.
* The `Runners added four in the second, with Jorgensen again providing the big blow with a two-run double down the left-field line. Berkey added a sacrifice fly, and the freshman Morrissey singled to right to pick up his first career RBI.
* Senior Daniel Carrizosa made it 6-0 in the third, when his double to right-center chased home Eric Charles.
* The Tigers rallied in the fourth, pushing five across in the frame. Charles Middleton led off the frame with a ringing double down the left-field line and came through the backdoor of a 6-4-3 CSUB double play. After an error, Wyatt Hoffman's drove in three with a bases loaded double over the head of Roberson in center. Pacific added another when James McGlenaghan singled through the right-side.
* Charles exited in the fifth with Tigers on the corners and two down, making way for CSUB's Jaykob Acosta. Acosta got a ground ball to escape the jam.
* The `Runners doubled their lead to 7-5 on an Aaron Casillas' RBI single back through the box in the fifth.
* CSUB made it 8-5 when Berkey led of the sixth with a triple off the wall in right-center and scored on Morrissey's RBI ground out.
* Pacific came all the way back to even the score in the eighth, scoring three runs on just two hits. Alex LaForestier started the rally with a sacrifice fly, while James Arakawa and Ben Nemivant each had RBI hits. Kevin Altamirano would pick off Arakawa at first base to keep CSUB even at eight.
* Freshman Jack Lee made his first appearance in the eighth, entering with a man on and striking out two to end the threat. Lee would surrender three hits and the go ahead run in the ninth, but pick up the win
* Three Pacific singles in the top of the ninth gave the Tigers a 9-8 lead, but the `Runners would respond in the bottom half. Following a lead-off walk and a fielder's choice, Jorgensen belted a long, walk-off home run to right, giving CSUB its second win of the season.

QUOTABLE…

Head Coach Jeremy Beard
On a long day for CSUB…
"I thought we had an excellent day all the way around. If you add up all the things we did today, I think you'd say we grew quite a bit today and did some things that will help us win down the road."

On matching up with Pacific..
"That's a very good team over there, they swing it really well, and for us to hang in it when things didn't go our way says a lot about this team. Things didn't go our way in the ninth and we easily could have gone down quietly, but instead we stayed after it and picked up a big result"

On the momentum of a walk-off win…
"We really needed that shot in the arm. Our guys have been out here executing and giving it their all and to win that game on a walk-off home run is extremely fitting on this day, and this season, for where we are right now and for what is to come."

Tyler Jorgensen
On a game one loss…
"We played pretty well in game one, it was disappointing to lose, but we were never out of it and we knew we'd compete today. We played hard and everyone was locked in throughout."

On bouncing back in game two…
"That's the first time I've played two nine inning games in a day, guys were tired, but we stuck with it and played hard. It was a great moment for all of us and I think it's going to help us a lot."

On his play in the series and his walk-off home run to beat Pacific in game two…
"I had a tough Fresno series where I didn't play like I wanted to, and coming out and playing well so far this series has been very uplifting for me. I realize that I'm here to play and I'm not concerned with anything else, I just want to come to play as hard as I can every day."

On Jack Lee's performance…
"It was unbelievable. Jack came in fired up right off the bat and I could tell he was ready to go – he's only been at practice for one week and he walked into a tough situation and shoved. It inspires all of us, everyone will see that and wonder, 'why can't I do that?' and 'why can't I get my number called when it's not expected and just go and shove?'"

Jack Lee
On entering the game late, his first career appearance..
"Number one I was excited, but that's me right there, that's me – I've been waiting for that moment my whole life and I was ready to compete for the team. I just wanted to do my part and help us win the ball game."

On his diving play off the mound…
"I know he's bunting, everyone in the ballpark knows he's bunting. I obviously thought he'd get it down, but ball goes up and instincts take over. I knew I was probably the only one in the vicinity to get that ball and I laid out for it."

On seeing Jorgensen's game-winning home run and getting his first college win…
"You have no idea, just pure joy. Pure joy. I haven't been here for very long, but I love this team."
