Beach Volleyball Closes First Day of Big West Challenge



SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team completed a busy day of action Friday, contesting three matches at the Big West Challenge. The Roadrunners started the day by dropping a pair of hard-fought matches against two ranked opponents at the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex before taking two of the final five contests.

"I feel that we definitely improved throughout the day, especially compared to the first two games," from Cesar Benatti, CSUB's Head Coach. "Playing in this tournament is really tough, and if we want to get some wins we need to step up to another level. We are moving towards that direction."

"The loss against UC Davis was a bit disappointing but is part of our process of getting better and picking up more wins in the Big West," added Benatti. "Tomorrow is a new day, and the goal is the same – keep getting better!"

#5 Cal Poly 5, CSUB 0

Bakersfield's opening match went the way of host Cal Poly, the fifth-ranked team in the country. While the Mustangs did sweep the `Runners, CSUB's No. 3 pair of Alaina Gendale and Hayley McCluskey fought for and won Set 2 before dropping the third-set tiebreaker.

#19 Long Beach State 4, CSUB 1

Facing off against another Top 20 opponent, the `Runners enjoyed their No. 2 pairing of Cameron Solberg and Milica Vukobrat sweeping their Long Beach State counterparts for a team point. CSUB's No. 4s, Anna Unke and Brooke Boiseau, also played well, dropping a pair of close sets to the 49ers.

CSUB 2, UC Davis 3

The Roadrunners closed the day with a valiant effort, taking two of the five matches against UC Davis on Friday. No. 2 and 4 pairings swept their opponents on the other side of the net. Bakersfield's No. 1, 2 and 5 played the Aggies well, getting edged by four or less in each set. Mapuhola Sekona and Seleisa Elisaia forced a third set after taking the second, 21-13.

CSUB will return to the Swanson Beach Volleyball Complex on Saturday for two more matches before heading home. The `Runners are scheduled to face off against No. 10 Hawai'i at 11:45 a.m. (PT) before closing the Big West Challenge against CSUN at 4:45 p.m.
