CSUB Athletics Announces Fan Attendance Update

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With the continued improvement of California's COVID-19 status as well as recently relaxed safety restrictions, California State University, Bakersfield has announced that a limited number of fans will be permitted at CSUB Athletics baseball and beach volleyball home events starting in April.

Earlier this month, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) outlined a new set of policies that would allow outdoor athletics facilities to open at reduced capacity effective Apr. 1. Last week, the Big West Conference Board of Directors announced unanimous approval for member schools to welcome fans to spring sporting events. These updates paved the way for CSUB to make the decision to open its gates and allow a number of select fans to root on the Roadrunners as of Apr. 1.

"This is thrilling news for our scholar-athletes, coaches and students," said CSUB President Lynnette Zelezny, who serves on the Big West Board of Directors. "Every `Runner in our Athletics program has been incredibly disciplined in following our safety protocols and because of that commitment, we are able to begin to slowly and responsibly open competition to spectators. This is a big step forward for CSUB."

The health and safety of `Runner student-athletes, coaches, and staff continues to be the primary focus of CSUB Athletics. The Department's steadfast conviction for upholding the policies and procedures established to guarantee safety has led to CSUB becoming an example for athletics departments around the state and the country.

The `Runners have benefitted from having to cancel very few contests due to their own health and safety concerns issues, fewer than most of the programs in California, and CSUB Athletics will continue to prioritize the processes that helped create its success. All fans in attendance at CSUB home events will be expected to follow those processes.

"I want to thank the Big West Board of Directors and our campus leadership for allowing us to move forward with limited attendance for Beach Volleyball and Baseball," said Kenneth "Ziggy" Siegfried, CSUB's Director of Athletics. "With attendance being limited, we will place our focus on allowing student-athletes the opportunity for two guests, which will allow their families to watch their games. We also want to ensure that CSUB students are able to attend games, so we are setting aside a limited number of tickets for them."
