CSUB Defeated by No. 1 USC in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES – Facing off against the nationally top-ranked USC Trojans, the CSU Bakersfield beach volleyball team put up a strong fight but ultimately fell on the road. The Roadrunners' top pairing of Emily Hansen and Hana Makonova gave USC's No. 1 pair all it could handle, but CSUB came up short as the Trojans earned a 5-0 victory at Merle Norman Stadium.

"I thought this match was really good experience," said Cesar Benatti, CSUB's Head Coach. "Our main goal was to come here and get a little better and I think we accomplished that. We put up a good fight in a few matches. There are some things we have been working on and playing a good team is always tough because of their consistency and knowledge of the game."

Benatti also applauded the efforts of Hansen and Makonova, who moved up from the No. 2 pair to No. 1 and pushed USC's top pairing to the brink: "Hana and Emily have been very consistent. Their connection keeps getting better and keeps growing. Because of their performance in practice and in games, the change made sense. Cameron and Mili are also growing their connection and I thought they played better today."

Hansen and Makonova put together a late surge in the first set against USC's Tina Graudina and Sammy Slater. Bakersfield's pair took a first-set loss, 21-17, but was not disheartened and continue to pressure the Trojans in Set 2. After an early lead over USC, the pair of `Runners staved off a match point, but eventually dropped the second set, 21-18.

The `Runners (1-2) will close out this week's action with an exhibition doubleheader against Vanguard on Saturday, Mar. 20. First serve of Match 1 is set for 10 a.m. at the Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex at the Student Rec Center.
