BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - CSU Bakersfield women's basketball showed improvement on Wednesday night in the Icardo Center but key lulls offensively from the Roadrunners would sway the end result in favor of Sacramento State, 60-50.
Jayden Eggleston was the only player for CSUB in double figures finishing with a team-high 14 points in the contest. Eggleston, Tatyanna Clayburne and Andie Easley paced the `Runners on the glass each grabbing a team-best five on the night.
Both teams shot 40.0% in the first quarter trading baskets for most of the period. Neither squad was able to clinch an advantage before time expired with the score knotted, 13-13.
Sacramento St. led at the first media timeout of the second period, 19-17. Easley knocked down a 3-pointer out of the timeout to lift CSUB, 20-19. The Roadrunners would have a moment of hot shooting with back-to-back triples from Sage Bridges-Bey following and a 5-0 run to close the half, 28-23.
The Hornets tied the game in the third quarter capitalizing on missed shots from the `Runners. A 12-2 run erased 6:03 from the clock and put CSUB down, 30-35, with 3:57 left in the quarter. It would get worse before it got better. The Roadrunners faced a 10-point deficit ahead of the final stretch on the back of a Hornets 9-4 run.
CSUB couldn't quite close the gap, but kept the game competitive in the fourth period. Down eight points (45-53) with 1:03 to go the Roadrunners reached the foul limit putting the Hornets on the free throw line for free points as Sac State would go on to win, 60-50.
Bakersfield (1-6) wraps its homestand with San Joaquin Valley rival Fresno State on Saturday afternoon. The game will air on ESPN+ for fans who cannot attend in-person with a tip-off set for a 1:01 p.m.
