`Runners Fall in Second Half at Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - CSU Bakersfield women's basketball dropped a halftime lead on Saturday afternoon closing a three-game road swing with a loss at Santa Clara, 53-67. Second half turnovers, missed shots, and fouls aided in the Broncos offensive run as the Roadrunners dropped to 1-3 on the season.

Jayden Eggleston was the only double figure scorer for CSUB totaling 17 points in the contest. Hennie van Schaik and Lexus Green each finished with nine points. Miracle Saxon had a team-best two steals while van Schaik grabbed a team-high five rebounds.

It was a low scoring first quarter but the Roadrunners managed the Broncos well enough to lead the entire period and be on top, 8-5. Eggleston led all scorers with six points.

It would be a close game for the next two periods before the scoring gap widened to double digits. Bakersfield had built its largest lead (24-17, 3:08) in the second quarter but SCU shortened the scoring margin ahead of halftime, 29-26.

The Roadrunners limited themselves to eight turnovers against the Broncos in the first half, forcing 13. Neither team had any double figure scorers but Eggleston led all with eight points.

A made 3-pointer from Andie Easley put CSUB above SCU by four, 34-30. The score was knotted 34 all with under six and a half minutes to play in the period. The next three minutes of the third saw two tied scores and four lead changes before Santa Clara tallied its four-point third quarter lead, 44-40.

Down two with 9:00 left in the game the Roadrunners went ice cold going without a made basket until the last 13 seconds of the contest on a three-point play from Eggleston. Seven of the 13 four quarter points came from Eggleston at the charity stripe. Bakersfield went too long without a basket and was outscored by 10 points in the period for the final result, 53-67.

CSUB returns home on Tuesday to open a four-game home stand beginning with Pepperdine. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the Icardo Center with the broadcast on ESPN+.
