BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - CSU Bakersfield women's basketball understood the assignment, resetting the program's largest margin of victory on Tuesday in an extremely skewed win over Bethesda, 111-19.
CSUB had five players finish in double-figures and three tally double-doubles as the Roadrunners opened the season 1-0 for the fourth-straight year. Jayden Eggleston had 21 points, leadings all scorers in the contest. She grabbed 10 rebounds for her first double-double on the year. Freshman Kayla Morris had 14 points and 10 rebounds in her debut while Hennie van Schaik scored 13 points and snatched a game-high 14 boards.
Miracle Saxon went 6-of-10 from the field, including a pair of threes, scoring 16 points. Active on the defensive end as well, Saxon had a game-best six steals. Andie Easley was a few rebounds short of a double-double with seven and 13 points on the night.
BU never led and struggled on both ends of the floor. The Flames had just 2 points at the end of the first quarter while the Roadrunners had just begun to find their rhythm, scoring 23 points – the least of any period. CSUB added 24 points in the second quarter and held Bethesda to five to lead 47-7 at halftime.
Bakersfield pulled further away in the third and fourth quarters, largely behind a strong bench performance as CSUB's bench contributed 61 points. The difference would go as far as 93 points in the fourth (4th, 3:49), but end 111-19 – a 92-point difference.
It wasn't a marquee matchup for the Roadrunners on College Basketball Opening Day, but BU did give the women one more game to fine tune ahead of a formidable non-conference slate, including #9 Oregon State and #20 UCLA.
CSUB (1-0) opens a three-game road slate next week at Pacific (11/17) and #9 Oregon State (11/20).
