!Viva Los `Runners! Herrera, Armendariz Shine in CSUB Win

Bakersfield, Calif. – Freshman goalkeeper Sucre Herrera made six saves and captain Carlos Armendariz scored his third goal of the season as CSU Bakersfield beat Cal State Fullerton, 1-0, in front of a raucous crowd of 1,439, Wednesday at the Main Soccer Field. The Roadrunners won for the third time in four games and improved to 2-1-0 in Big West Conference play.

"This is the result that we've been searching for all season," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "Our focus after last weekend was to tighten our lines and in the second half the sacrifice from our goalkeeper, the back four in front of him and our team to finish off the shutout was excellent."

Armendariz converted his third penalty of the season to give Bakersfield a 1-0 lead just 11 minutes into the game, providing all the goal scoring CSUB would need on the night.
Herrera earned the clean sheet in his first career start, entering the game with just 15 regular-season minutes under his belt. He turned aside six Titan shots, none bigger than his 60th minute save on Samuel Owusu's point blank chance.

The dangerous Owusu entered the game ranked ninth in the league with four goals scored.

"We wanted to stay solid in the back, get the ball forward and let those guys do their jobs," said Herrera. "We did that tonight, got the win and now we just want to keep winning."
When Fullerton did manage to get behind Herrera, the Bakersfield backline was up to the task. Harry Downing, Eric Whelan, Stephon Marcano and Bryson Hankins anchored a strong defensive effort with Whelan stepping up to clear a 77th minute chance off the line, stifling Fullerton's final scoring chance of the night.

The announced crowd of 1,439 was CSUB's largest men's soccer crowd since Oct. 5, 2018, when the `Runners hosted 2,298 fans in a win over 7th-ranked Air Force.

Tonight's contest was billed as Viva Los `Runners Night, and as a celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month and Latinx culture at CSUB and in the Bakersfield community.

"The energy and atmosphere tonight were fantastic," Grant said. "Our marketing staff were wonderful in their preparation and we're very grateful. The fans were outstanding all 90 minutes. I don't think we earn a shutout without the energy we received from the crowd tonight."

The Roadrunners are back in action Saturday night, at UC Santa Barbara, with kick off set for 7:00 p.m.

Scoring Summary:
11 | Following a penalty in the box Armendariz stopped into his third goal of the season, driving a low shot into the left-side of the goal for the game's lone score in CSUB's 1-0 win.
