Bakersfield Wins 3rd-Straight with Another Sweep

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A strong start led to the second-straight sweep and third-consecutive victory for the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team. On Friday night in the Icardo Center, the Roadrunners defended their home court with a 3-0 victory over visiting Long Beach State (25-20, 27-25, 25-20).

When asked about CSUB jumping out to a good start, junior Hayley McCluskey credited a group-focused mindset by the `Runners: "We have been focusing on things we have been talking about, playing together as a team. We do such a good job coming together as a group, encouraging one another. That's how we get a faster start, and we get kills like [we did tonight] and that leads to wins."

McCluskey led another well-balanced attack for CSUB, posting a team-high 10 kills against the Beach. Entering the match, LBSU's Kashauna Williams led the Big West Conference with 4.13 kills per set. Williams did tally 11 kills on the match, but the `Runner front line limited the big hitter to just .065 hitting on the evening (11-9-31).

Bakersfield enjoyed five or more kills from six different `Runners, including seven kills from freshman Samia Bhakta. Middle blocker Brooke Boiseau added seven kills and five blocks against the Beach.

Junior setter Seleisa Elisaia did a little bit of everything once again, recording six kills, 30 assists, 10 digs, and three blocks in Bakersfield's victory. A versatile weapon, Elisaia remains just one of two players in the country averaging over 1.4 kills and 9.0 assists per set this season.

With the win, Bakersfield improved to 13-6 on the year and 6-5 in Big West play. Predicted to finish ninth of 11 teams in the preseason coaches' poll, the `Runners are currently tied for fourth with UC Irvine at six league wins.

The `Runners will return to the Kern Schools Court on Saturday to close out a four-match home stint. CSUB will welcome Cal State Fullerton (8-9, 5-5 BWC) to the Icardo Center with another 5 p.m. first serve on the schedule.
