`Runners Clinch Playoff Berth with Win at UCSD

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Seniors Niklas Roessler and Ricardo Soza each scored as CSU Bakersfield won 2-0 at UC San Diego, Saturday night, clinching at least a sixth-place regular-season finish and a spot in the 2021 Big West Championship tournament. The Roadrunners are playing their first season as members of the Big West and have solidified their post-season standing with wins in three of their last four.

"We're pleased with our result tonight and to have secured a spot in the Big West playoffs," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "Our second half performance has shown our growth and maturity as a program. Our goal now is to push for a post-season home match."

Bakersfield is now 6-8-1 overall and 5-3-0 in conference play with 15 league points.

The `Runners could clinch a home playoff game as soon as tomorrow, depending on results from around the league. If they get no outside help, CSUB would need a win over Cal Poly next Saturday to ensure a top-four finish.

The game was played mostly in the middle third of the field for much of the first 70 minutes, before Bakersfield opened the scoring with a strong sequence of passes that resulted in a tap-in goal for Roessler.

Soza made it 2-0 just eight minutes later.

"We're delighted for Niklas and Ricardo to get their first goals of the season." Grant added.

Freshman goalkeeper Scott Pengelly made six saves, including five in the first half to pick up his second shutout of the season.

CSUB will play post-season soccer for the sixth time in seven seasons under Grant. The `Runners advanced to the Western Athletic Conference Semi-Finals in 2019, their last full season.

Bakersfield wraps up the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 30 at home against Central California rival Cal Poly. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., on The Main Soccer Field.

Big West quarterfinal action is set for Wednesday, Nov. 3, with games being played at the campus of the higher-seeded team.

Scoring Summary:
69 | The Roadrunners strung together passes near midfield before Roessler sent O'Hara up the left-side of the field. O'Hara took the ball all the way to the endline before beating his man and finding Roessler alone on the goalmouth for the lone goal of the match.
77 | Freshman Peter McKiernan took a feed on the right side and danced around a defender before sending a low, hard cross directly onto the foot of Soza. Soza volleyed the pass out of the air past Triton goalkeeper Nick Shore to make it 2-0.
