CSUB Falls in Finale; Eyes Conference Tournament

#4 Roadrunners to Host #5 UC Davis, Wednesday, Nov. 3 in Big West Quarterfinal Matchup

Bakersfield, Calif. – Cal Poly substitute Ocean Salari netted the game-winning goal late in the first half, as the Mustangs held on for a 2-0 win over host CSU Bakersfield, Saturday night on the Main Soccer Field, in the regular-season finale for both teams. The Roadrunners close out conference play with a 5-4-0 record, good for the #4 Big West seed and a home quarterfinal in the upcoming conference tournament.
 
"Small details are really important in these matches, and I thought Cal Poly had the better of those moments tonight," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "Overall, it was a very hard-fought game and another tough Big West match that will set us up well for the playoffs."
 
The Mustangs had the better of the play early but couldn't crack the CSUB defense or freshman goalkeeper Scott Pengelly until the 41st minute.
 
Pengelly had three saves at the break, all high quality, and finished with four for the game.
 
Bakersfield had at least three grade-A chances in the second half but couldn't find the equalizer. Cal Poly would add a second goal against the run of play for the final margin of victory.
 
CSUB turns its attention the league championship tournament, and a date with #5 seed UC Davis in an opening round matchup on Wednesday, Nov. 3. The two teams met on the same field just ten days ago, in a thrilling 2-1 overtime win for the `Runners.
 
The Roadrunners, who will make their sixth post-season appearance in seven years under Grant, are 3-0 this season following a conference loss.

41 | Ocean Salari put the Mustangs on top late in the first when he collected a loose ball on the left flank, beat his defender toward the middle and lofted a shot into the far corner of the goal to give Cal Poly a 1-0 lead.
80 | Patterson took a short pass from Max Kleinhammes and stepped into a shot from the top of the box to make it 2-0. Pengelly got a piece of the ball, but his deflection hit the underside of the crossbar and bounced down into the goal.
