Shepherd OT Winner Lifts CSUB Past UC Davis

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Senior midfielder Tom Shepherd scored twice, including the golden goal in the 103rd minute, lifting CSU Bakersfield to a 2-1 win over visiting UC Davis, Wednesday night at The Main Soccer Field, and into fourth place in the Big West standings with a 4-3-0 league record.

"I'm pleased with the personality we played with tonight," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "We knew we had to play gritty after our performance on Saturday against Irvine and the response from our players was excellent."

The Roadrunners set a physical and relentless tone early, with heavy on-ball pressure that created several UC Davis turnovers and counterattack opportunities. The two teams went on to combine for 31 fouls and eight cautions.

Shepherd's first goal came on the counterattack in the 20th minute to give CSUB an early 1-0 lead, but UCD's Grant Fidler answered just eight minutes later to draw the Aggies even.

The two teams traded chance after chance over the next 75 minutes, before Shepherd buried the game winner when he pounced on a loose ball following Bakersfield's 12th corner kick of the night.

The `Runners outshot the Aggies 19-10, including a 7-3 margin in shots on goal.

Freshman goalkeeper Scott Pengelly made two saves, including a sprawling save in the first overtime to deny Fidler and keep Bakersfield in the game.

Ricardo Soza, Carlos Armendariz, Niklas Roessler and Harry Downing picked up assists for CSUB.

The `Runners head to UC San Diego Saturday, for a 5 p.m. kick-off against the Tritons. A win would clinch a Big West Tournament berth for Bakersfield.

Scoring Summary:
20 | A turnover at midfield led to the game's first goal when CSUB midfielder Ricardo Soza picked up a loose ball and found Tom Shepherd running up the wing. Shepherd used his speed to get past the defense, before cutting to his left at the top of the box and finishing powerfully into the top left corner.
28 | UC Davis tied the game eight minutes later when Grant Fidler pounced on the rebound of Maximilian Arfsten's shot and finished with his head into a vacated goal. Scott Pengelly made a strong reactionary save on Arfsten's initial shot, but Fidler was left unmarked in the center of the goal.
103 | Niklas Roessler's corner kick bounced around the box before landing on the foot of Shepherd, who volleyed a finish into the top left corner from 10 yards away.
