Big West-Leading Gauchos Knock Off `Runners 3-1

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – On the heels of a tough loss the night before, the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team hosted UC Santa Barbara in the Icardo Center Saturday night. While the Roadrunners rebounded to put up a strong fight, the visiting Gauchos earned a 3-1 victory (25-18, 25-27, 25-22, 25-20).

"One thing that we're working on is moving on from our mistakes more quickly," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "Today, our team relied on each other rather than focusing on their own errors. I thought we were much better today than yesterday."

Bakersfield outlasted UCSB 27-25 in the second set for its lone game won during the match. The Gauchos improve to 4-0 in Big West Conference play with the victory while CSUB fell to 1-3.

The `Runners looked to their floor general, setter Seleisa Elisaia, to lead CSUB once again. The junior dished out 33 assists against the Gauchos while also chipping in seven kills, 15 digs, and a pair of blocks. Junior Milica Vukobrat tallied a team-high 11 kills from the right side to go with seven digs and three blocks of her own. Redshirt junior Brooke Boiseau tallied eight kills and four blocks on Saturday.

UCSB opened the first set with a slim advantage and held on to it most of the way. From a 20-18 lead, the visiting Gauchos won the final five points to take an early lead on the match.

Bakersfield kept UCSB within reach the whole second set and CSUB used a 4-1 run to go ahead 24-23. The Gauchos staved off a pair of set point opportunities for the `Runners, but CSUB finally put the game to rest when Boiseau sent a kill to the floor. Bakersfield tied the match at one set apiece with the 27-25 victory.

UCSB jumped out to an 8-2 advantage and never looked back in Set 3. The `Runners made a late, 6-1 surge, but it was too late and the Gauchos took a 2-1 advantage on a 25-22 win.

Bakersfield led 17-14 in the fourth and final set, but UCSB went on an 8-2 run to gain separation. The `Runners pulled within two points at 22-20, but the Gauchos finished off the match with a 25-20 victory in the Icardo Center.

CSUB (8-4, 1-3 BWC) will hit the road to play four matches over the next two weeks before returning to the Icardo Center. Next up, the `Runners will take on UC Davis (Oct. 7) and UC Riverside (Oct. 9) before tackling Cal Poly and Hawai'i the following week.
