CSUB Sweeps UC Davis on the Road

DAVIS, Calif. – The CSU Bakersfield volleyball team traveled north for a battle against UC Davis and rose to the occasion on Thursday evening. The Roadrunners ousted the Aggies on their home court for CSUB's first conference road sweep since the 2017 season (25-23, 25-18, 25-23).

Giovana Melo, CSUB's eighth-year Director of Volleyball, credited her team's even-keeled play for the success in Northern California: "I thought the team had fun tonight. They played relaxed, focusing on making each other better and they did a great job of executing the game plan."

Bakersfield improved to 9-4 on the year with the victory and now holds a 2-3 record in Big West Conference play. The `Runners continued to rely on a well-balanced effort to lead the team to success. CSUB recorded a .259 hitting percentage while holding the Aggie offense to a .102 clip. Bakersfield averaged 15 digs per set and tallied 44 kills to Davis' 29.

Individually, junior setter Seleisa Elisaia continued to pose a problem as a dual threat. The native of South Jordan, Utah registered her team-high 10th double-double of the season with 10 kills and 26 assists against the Aggies. From the right side, fellow junior Milica Vukobrat paced all players with 12 kills on the night while also chipping in five digs.

The `Runners and Aggies played a very tight first set featuring 12 ties, including at 19-19. Bakersfield surged ahead to a 23-20 lead, but the Aggies pulled back within one point at 24-23. Outside hitter Hayley McCluskey sent a kill to the floor to seal the deal, 25-23, as CSUB took an early lead on its host. Vukobrat led all student-athletes with five kills in the opening frame.

CSUB used a 10-3 run to gain some separation in the middle of the second set, 18-13. Back-to-back kills by Elisaia set up a Set Point opportunity and the `Runners extended their lead on the match with a 25-18 victory. As a squad, Bakersfield hit .345 as a team while tallying four blocks in the set.

From a 16-16 tie in Set 3, CSUB surged ahead to a 23-19 advantage. UC Davis responded with a 3-0 sprint to pull within one point, but Bakersfield used a McCluskey kill and an Elisaia block to seal the sweep, 25-23.

The `Runners will return to Bakersfield for a quick pit stop before continuing a stretch of four-straight road games. Next up, CSUB will head south to meet UC Riverside (4-11, 0-5 BWC) on Saturday, Oct. 9, with first serve scheduled for 4 p.m. (PT).
