Second Half Struggles Doom CSUB

Bakersfield, Calif. – Four second-half goals doomed the Roadrunners and lifted UC Irvine to a 5-0 victory, Saturday evening in front of an announced crowd of 443 at The Main Soccer Field. With the loss CSU Bakersfield split its third consecutive week in Big West play and now stands 3-3-0 in league action and 4-8-1 overall.

"They're a good team and they forced us into some mistakes during one stretch in the second half," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "I don't believe the gap is that big, but for us it's about getting used to the Big West and tonight was a hard lesson."

The Anteaters scored three of their four second-half goals in a span of just 3:24, turning a tightly contested, back-and-forth game into a forgone conclusion with 25 minutes remaining.

CSUB had two chances to get on the board in the first half on long strikes from defenders Bryson Hankins and Edgar Gonzalez. On both occasions, UCI goalkeeper Gordon Botterill made sprawling saves to stymie the `Runners.

Botterill made four saves to earn the shutout victory, while freshman Scott Pengelly made three stops for CSUB.

Bakersfield returns to The Main Soccer Field on Wednesday, Oct. 20 hosting UC Davis in a critical conference match-up beginning at 7:00 PM. Tickets can be purchased at GoRunners.com/Tickets.

How it Happened:
20 | Oscar Cervantes' long pass from the midfield found Francesco Montanile streaking down the left-wing. Montanile collected the ball and dribbled back towards the middle before depositing the games' first goal low into the far corner.
60 | Beto Alvarenga made it 2-0 UCI when he finished off a pretty passing play that began with Ricardo Ibarra and Ashish Chattha. The ball found Alvarenga alone at the top of the six-yard box and he finished into the top of the net.
62 | Alvarenga scored again after Cervantes shot ricocheted off the crossbar and fell to his feet at the goal mouth, putting the Anteaters ahead 3-0.
64 | An almost identical goal made it 4-0 just two minutes later, this time substitute Rafael Espinoza was on the spot and finished for his first of the season.
