Armendariz, Markus Lead Bakersfield Past Sac State

Sacramento, Calif. – A pair of second half goals lifted CSU Bakersfield to a 2-0 victory over host Sacramento State on Wednesday afternoon. Carlos Armendariz and Justin Markus scored for the Roadrunners and freshman goalkeeper Scott Pengelly earned his first career clean sheet, as CSUB improved to 4-7-1 overall and 3-2-0 in Big West Conference play with the win.

"We didn't play our best football today, but we were disciplined throughout the match," said CSUB Head Coach Richie Grant. "We managed the score well and played team defense with the right mentality. We've played four of our five Big West road matches and we're very pleased to have three road wins, as we return home for three of our last four games."

For the second time in three outings, Armendariz scored the game-winning goal from the penalty spot. It was the fourth penalty kick goal of the season for the Bakersfield captain, a school record for the Division I era at CSUB.

"I'm not surprised by Carlos' consistency at the penalty spot," Grant explained. "He is a top character person, a leader in our program and he works very hard to improve as a player."

Markus' goal was the first of his `Runner career. The junior from Phoenix, Ariz., was making his 39th career appearance for the Blue and Gold.

"The entire team was delighted to see Justin get his first career goal," added Grant.

Bakersfield put eight of its nine shots on goal, consistently testing Sacramento State goalkeeper Ryan Curtis throughout the match.

Pengelly needed just a single save to earn the shutout but came off his line several times to stifle Hornet scoring chances on both crosses and set pieces. The Belfast, Northern Ireland, native won for the third time this season.

Harry Downing, Stephon Marcano and Eric Whelan each played all 90 minutes helping to secure the Roadrunners second shutout of the season, and their second in three games.

CSUB returns to the Main Soccer Field Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. against UC Irvine.

The `Runners will play three of their final four games at home as they hunt for qualification into the Big West Tournament following the conclusion of the regular season.

SCORING SUMMARY:

79 | Marcano collected a loose ball at midfield and sprung Markus with a long pass over the top of the Hornet defense. Markus' first shot was stopped by Sac. State goalkeeper Ryan Curtis, but he managed to collect his own rebound and cut across the penalty spot before finishing into an empty net.
