Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UCR Takes Game 1 in Conference Series

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – It was a career night for redshirt junior Jayden Eggleston who reset her career-high with a game-best twenty-three points on Friday. CSU Bakersfield had a pair on the women's basketball team finish in double figures, but it wasn't enough to get a win over UC Riverside. The Roadrunners were short eight points and lost, 64-56.

Eggleston led the `Runners in scoring for the second time this season and had four rebounds and two steals against the Highlanders. Vanessa Austin added eleven points and five offensive rebounds on the night.

Graduate senior Andie Easley had a career- and game-high ten rebounds, including seven defensive. She went without a made basket in the contest but also added four assists for the Roadrunners. UCR had a trio of players in double figures in Keilanei Cooper (15), Jordan Webster (15) and Jada Holland (12).

First Quarter

A rebound and put back from senior Vanessa Austin put CSUB on the scoreboard first but UCR tied the contest in the next possession. Eggleston and Austin combined for the first eleven team points. UCR had a four -point, 15-11 lead with 1:05 left and finished the quarter on a 9-2 run for a seven point, 20-13, lead at the end of the first quarter.

Second Quarter

Eggleston made a floater in traffic up the middle of the paint to start the second period and cut the UCR lead down to five, 20-15. Back-to-back threes from junior Miracle Saxon brought the game within one as the Roadrunners found themselves down, 21-22. CSUB tied the game at 28 apiece after a rebound and tip in lay up from freshman guard Sophie Tougas with under three minutes to play in the half. The rest of the period would be played tight as UCR would take a one-point edge into the locker room up 31-30.

Third Quarter

There were two lead changes and one tied score to start the third period, followed by alternating scoring runs through the end of the quarter. CSUB brought the score within one possession twice at 4:47 and again with under a minute to play. An official review at the end of the quarter changed a UCR three to a two and the lead down to two, 45-53.

Fourth Quarter

UC Riverside opened the fourth quarter with an 8-1 scoring run to earn their largest lead of the night, 53-44. The next 6:30 of the game would go in favor of the Highlanders who had a strong point quarter. UCR earned their first Big West Conference win with the 64-56 victory.
