`Runners Drop Hard-Fought Series

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A pair of double figure scorers paced CSU Bakersfield, but it would not be enough to split the league series as the Roadrunners picked up another Big West Conference loss Saturday night. Bakersfield hit a third quarter slump and couldn't recover as Long Beach State secured a 69-58 win.

Graduate senior Andie Easley led all `Runners in scoring with 13 points while sophomore Lexus Green added 11 and a career- and game-high seven assists on the night. Jayden Eggleston had a productive game with nine points, a team-best seven rebounds and four assists.

Freshman guard Sophie Tougas came in and scored a career-high eight points, five rebounds and chipped in an assist and steal for the Roadrunners. LBSU had a trio of players in double figures in Justina King (16), Myrrah Joseph (12) and Patricia Chung (12).

First Quarter

CSUB had made a pair of baskets before Long Beach State got on the scoreboard. A trey from King put the visitors ahead, 6-5, before Tougas knocked down her first three pointer to put the Roadrunners ahead, 8-6. Bakersfield led by as many as nine in the period with 4:08 and again with 3:00 in the quarter. CSUB would not score the rest of the period but would hold off the 49ers for a 17-12 lead.

Second Quarter

Green opened the quarter with a three-pointer in the first fifteen seconds but then CSUB went cold for nearly a two-minute span allowing LBSU to cut the scoring gap to three, 20-17. Long Beach State tied the contest 31 apiece at 2:11 with a three-point shot from King. The 49ers took a 35-34 lead with 38 seconds but a buzzer beating jumper from Eggleston gave the home team the 36-35 edge at half time.

Third Quarter

Long Beach State scored off of a CSUB turnover to retake the lead. There were four lead changes and two tied scores in the first five minutes of the period before LBSU would take control of the quarter and lead by as much as nine points and close the third period with their own buzzer beating layup to extend their lead to seven, 52-45.

Fourth Quarter

The fourth quarter was the closest played period. CSUB was able to claw its way back into the game down five, 57-62, with 2:39 left, but the third quarter scoring gap was just too much for the `Runners to overcome. LBSU ended the period on a 6-2 run for the final 68-59 score.
