Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

`Runner Women Pull Away Late, Sweep Hawai'i

Bakersfield, Calif. - The CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team rode timely three-point shooting and suffocating team defense to a 51-43 win over visiting Hawai'i on Saturday afternoon at the Icardo Center. Andie Easley finished 4-for-5 from behind the arc, scoring all of her game-high 15 points in the second half as the `Runners swept the Rainbow Wahine and improved to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in Big West Conference play.

"Hawai'i is a tough team, they fight, and we knew tonight's game would be a battle," said CSUB Head Coach Greg McCall. "They came out strong tonight and put us on our heels, but we talked as a team about sustaining our energy throughout the game and once we saw the ball go through the basket we were able to do that and build our energy."

Hawai'i opened the game on an 8-0 run, while Bakersfield missed its first 12 field-goal attempts of the game. The `Runners didn't make a field goal until freshman Sophie Tougas canned a three with 1:25 left in the first quarter. She knocked down another three-point shot with 0:44 remaining in the first and despite the slow start, CSUB carried a 10-9 lead into the break thanks to a tremendous team effort on the defensive end.

Tougas would finish with eight points, all in the first half.

Bakersfield's defensive effort continued in the second quarter, when the `Runners limited Hawaii to just four points in the frame and 14 in the first half to lead by five at the intermission.

CSUB pulled away in the second half, behind Easley's four three-point field goals.

The `Runners shot just 27.1% from the field, but came up big from behind the arc hitting 7-of-15 attempts. Bakersfield also finished 18-for-25 from the charity stripe, including 7-of-10 in the decisive fourth quarter to stifle a Hawai'i comeback attempt.

For the second night in a row, CSUB pressured Hawai'i's ball handlers, forcing 22 turnovers and converting them into 18 points.

The Rainbows beat CSUB on the glass, grabbing 48 boards on the night, including 18 on the offensive end, to Bakersfield's 33.

Amy Atwell paced Hawai'i offensively, scoring a game-high 23 points on 7-for-16 shooting, including five three point field goals.

Lexus Green added eight points, six rebounds and five assists for CSUB.

The `Runners return to action next weekend, hosting UC Riverside in a Big West series on Friday and Saturday afternoons. Both games are scheduled for 4:00 p.m. tip-offs.
