CSUB Drops Big West Opener



BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Redshirt junior Jayden Eggleston reset her career-high in points with twenty-two against Long Beach State, but the Roadrunners came up short in their Big West Conference opener Friday night. Bakersfield would give the league's unbeaten Niners a run for their money but could not close the second quarter scoring gap and lost, 61-57.
 
For the first time this season, Eggleston led all scorers in the contest. The Las Vegas, Nevada native went 9-of-12 from the floor, including 5-of-5 in the first half. Eggleston added five rebounds on the night, tied for second-most on the team.
 
Miracle Saxon was CSUB's second leading scorer at twelve points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds while Lexus Green dished out a career- and game-high six assists. Vanessa Austin chipped in eight points and five rebounds. Long Beach State had a pair of double figure scorers in Jasmine Hardy (17) and Justina King (12).
 
First Quarter
 
Long Beach State quickly scored a quick ten points before a three-point play from Austin put the `Runners on the scoreboard. CSUB tied the game at ten apiece with 3:02 left in the period. There were four lead changes in the last two and a half minutes with CSUB emerging on top, 16-15.
 
Second Quarter
 
LBSU tied the game then took a one-point lead from the charity stripe in the first fifteen seconds of the quarter. The Niners extended their lead to as much as nine with 3:11 before a pull up jumper from Green brought the deficit to seven at half time.
 
Third Quarter
 
Saxon opened the quarter with a basket to bring the game even closer, 34-29. CSUB found themselves within two at 8:25 but despite outscoring the Niners in the period the Roadrunners were down six, 49-43, going into the final ten minutes of the game.
 
Fourth Quarter
 
Bakersfield started the fourth quarter with a three-point play from Eggleston. The contest was tied at fifty-one each then fifty-four apiece with 4:41 left in the game. CSUB found themselves within two at 2:04 but would not score the rest of the way. Long Beach State would go on to win 61-57.
