Rohlfing, Loomer Reach Pac-12 Finals

Palo Alto, Calif. – Russell Rohlfing and Josh Loomer each advanced to the finals, and five more Roadrunners wrestled to berths in third-place bouts, to lead CSU Bakersfield in the morning session of the 2020 Pac-12 Championships hosted by Stanford University. Rohlfing and Loomer will wrestle for Pac-12 Championships and trips to the NCAA Tournament when wrestling resumes tonight at 6:00 p.m., while Alex Hernandez-Figueroa, Chance Rich, Wyatt Gerl, Jacob Thalin and Jarrod Snyder will compete for podium finishes.

Following a first-round bye, Rohlfing wrestled to his tenth-straight victory with a 5-3 decision over Arizona State's Josh Maruca. Maruca erased an early Rohlfing take down with a pair of escapes and the match was tied at two points a piece heading into the final period.

Rohlfing started the third on the bottom and clinched the win with an early reversal, before boosting his ride time advantage well over a minute.

The Bakersfield senior will advance to face second seeded Require Van de Mewre of Stanford in tonight's 149 lb final.

Loomer is the #2 seed in the 184 lb bracket and also received a bye to the semi-final round, where he faced off with Stanford's Foster Karmon. The two wrestlers exchanged escapes over the final two periods, and seemed destined for extra time, before
Loomer rushed Karmon and scored a bout-winning take down with less than five seconds remaining in the third.

Hernandez-Figueroa is 2-1 through three matches at the conference championships. He opened with a pin of Arkansas Little Rock's Jayden Carson in 6:39, before falling to #8 Brandon Courtney of Arizona State in the semi-finals. He posted a 10-0 major decision over Cal Poly's Benny Martinez to advance in the consolation bracket.

Gerl opened his tournament run with a dominating 12-3, major decision win over Arkansas Little Rock's Jose Champagne. He nearly advanced to the 157 lb final, but narrowly missed a bout tying take down in the final seconds of a 3-1 loss to Stanford's Tyler Eischens.

Gerl advanced to the third-place match when Oregon State's Logan Meek forfeited his opportunity in the consolation semi-finals. The Bakersfield senior will square off with Cal Poly's Brawley Lamar in tonight's contest. Gerl edged Lamar, 4-3, in a dual meet bout on Feb. 14.

Thalin knocked off Oregon State's Aaron Olmos for the second time in less than a month with a take down in the final 20 seconds of the third period, before he was eliminated from title contention by Stanford's #6 Shane Griffith.  

He recovered to breeze past Little Rock's William Edgar 5-1 and advance to a third-place match-up with Cal Poly's Bernie Truax

Rich suffered a 3-2 opening round loss at the hands of Arizona State's Joshua Kramer but bounced back with a 5-3 decision against Cal Poly's Cole Reyes. He'll get another crack at Kramer in tonight's third-place bout.

In the heavyweight division, Snyder suffered a late loss to Stanford's David Showunmi after receiving a bye to the semi-finals. He rebounded for a 7-2 win over Jamarcus Grant of Oregon State, to earn his place in the third-place bout against Cal Poly's Samuel Aguilar.

Angelo Martinoni, Albert Urias and Josh Annis will also wrestle tonight in fifth-place matches for the 141-, 174- and 197-pound weight classes, respectively.

Bakersfield currently sits in third place in the team competition, behind Arizona State and Stanford, with 84.5 points. 

Competition begins again, at Stanford's Maples Pavillion, with fifth-place bouts at 6 p.m. The evening session will be streamed live on Pac-12 TV.
