CSUB Drops Tight Road Game at California Baptist

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Thursday night's Western Athletic Conference game between CSU Bakersfield and California Baptist came down to the wire as the visiting Roadrunners pushed their hosts to the brink. Despite the hard-fought battle and a career-high 22 points from junior guard Cam Allen, CSUB fell on the road, 74-69.

A back and forth battle raged in the CBU Events Center in the first half. The visiting `Runners surged to a 22-15 advantage with nine minutes remaining, but the Lancers answered with back-to-back buckets to bring the score within two points.

CBU tied the score with four and a half minutes remaining, but CSUB used a 9-2 run down the stretch to take a 35-28 advantage into halftime. Allen's 5-for-5 shooting performance and 12 points helped the CSUB effort, but the `Runner defense was the key to success in the first half. Facing the WAC's top offense, Bakersfield limited CBU to just 37 percent shooting in the opening 20 minutes thanks to smothering defense, four blocks, and five steals.

As if they were able to simply flip a switch, the Lancers opened the second half hot on a 10-4 run, taking a one-point lead early in the period. The two teams continued to trade baskets and Taze Moore's stepback three-pointer gave the `Runners a 50-49 lead after the 14th lead change of the game.

CBU held its biggest lead of the game at 56-51 with just over nine minutes remaining. The `Runners never let the Lancers pull away, but Bakersfield was unable to get the final push it needed to regain the lead. After 15 lead changes and seven tied scores, CBU managed to hold off CSUB for the 74-69 victory. The Lancers, in particular, benefited from the whistles of the referees as the foul count was in their favor, 17-24.

Allen converted on 9-of-14 field goal attempts in the game, frequently attacking the rim in the CBU Events Center. Junior forward Shawn Stith chipped in 11 points and three rebounds on Thursday while Taze Moore added 10 points and three assists. Coming off the bench, center Ronne Readus tallied three blocks in just 13 minutes of action.

CSUB outshot CBU 53 percent to 41 percent, but nine Lancer three-pointers helped the host team offset the otherwise poor shooting. Free throws proved the difference in the second half as CBU knocked down 14-of-17 shots from the charity stripe in the period. The `Runners recorded seven blocks and six steals in Riverside.

With the loss, Bakersfield falls to 10-14 (4-5 WAC), but remains in a tight pack of teams fighting for seeding at the conference tournament in March. CBU (17-6, 7-2 WAC) kept its hold on second place in the WAC with the win. The `Runners will return home from a three-game road trip and host Chicago State and Kansas City in the Icardo Center next week.
