Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

`Runner Defense Stifles Chicago State in 64-54 Win

Bakersfield, Calif. – A well-rounded offensive effort coupled with smothering defense helped the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team to a 64-54 victory over Chicago State Thursday night. CSUB looked to the offense of juniors Greg Lee and Taze Moore while the Roadrunners stifled the visiting Cougars on the defensive end inside  the Icardo Center.

Lee, a native of Rockford, Ill., tallied 16 points on 6-of-10 shooting while adding four rebounds. Thursday's game marked the second time in the last three games Lee tallied 16 points or more after the forward dropped 18 points against UTRGV. Moore, a guard out of Southaven, Miss., chipped in 14 points, a game-high eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals in the contest. Eight different `Runners scored during the game while all eleven took the floor in a balanced assault.

CSUB also enjoyed a solid effort out of junior guard De'Monte Buckingham, who posted seven assists against the Cougars, just one shy of his career high. Bakersfield struggled from three-point range, making just 3-of-15 shots from outside, but the `Runners suffocated the Cougars to the tune of 35% shooting from the floor and 19% from distance. The one factor that kept Chicago State in the game was free throws as the visitor's hit 21-of-26 compared to just 13-of-21 for CSUB.

Bakersfield jumped out to a six-point lead early in the Western Athletic Conference contest. The Cougars battled back and managed to lead by two points with 2:24 left in the first half, but CSUB used a 6-2 run down the stretch to take a 28-24 lead into halftime.

Less than five minutes into the second period, the `Runners had raced out to a 38-26 advantage, their biggest lead of the game. Chicago State never went away and a tightly called game by the officials found the Cougars going to the free throw line often. With just over six minutes to go, Chicago State knocked down a jumper to make the score 48-47, but the `Runners would not give up the lead. CSUB used a 7-1 run to gain some breathing room and kept its visitor at a distance the rest of the game.

With the win, CSUB improved to 11-14 on the season and 5-5 in WAC play. Bakersfield still has six games remaining in league play before the WAC Tournament, which is shaping up to be a vicious battle. The `Runners are currently tied for the fourth seed in the tourney, but only two games separate the second seed from the sixth.

CSUB will have one day to prepare for its next contest, another home game on the blue Kern Schools Court. On Saturday, Feb. 15, Kansas City (12-14, 4-7 WAC) will come to the Icardo Center on Community College Night with tipoff set for 7 p.m. Free admission is available at the box office for all staff and students with a valid community college ID. The rest of `Runner fans can purchase tickets at the door or ahead of time at GoRunners.com/tickets.
