Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CSUB Falls to California Baptist

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A strong, third-quarter surge gave the CSU Bakersfield women's basketball team a nine-point lead heading into the final period. The Roadrunners were unable to hold off a late rally from California Baptist as the visiting Lancers came from behind for a 55-53 victory in the Icardo Center.

On the game, Jayden Eggleston and Miracle Saxon led the `Runner cause on Wednesday morning. Saxon tallied a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds while Eggleston did a little bit of everything, posting eight points, 11 boards, three assists, and four blocks. Vanessa Austin also chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds against CBU. As a team, CSUB finished the game with a season-high eight blocks.

Bakersfield held a two-point advantage after the first quarter and took the same margin into halftime, 26-24. In the third quarter, the `Runners hit 44 percent of their field goals, outscoring the Lancers 19-12 in the period. CBU's fourth quarter was even stronger as the visiting team scored 19 points to Bakersfield's eight. CSUB made just 4-of-14 field goal attempts in the final period and the team could not get the late basket it needed to tie the game.

CSUB outrebounded CBU 49-32 on the game, but Bakersfield did not capitalize on its opportunities, shooting just 34 percent from the field and 2-of-13 (.154) from three-point range. The `Runner bench outscored the Lancers 28-8 and CSUB owned the paint, 26-16.

After the loss, Bakersfield falls to 13-9 on the season. With a 5-4 Western Athletic Conference record, the `Runners sit right in the middle of a large group of teams vying for spots in the league standings. As of Wednesday, CSUB is one of five teams within two games of each other fighting for third place. The `Runners will have seven days off before their next game. CSUB will begin a stretch with four of the next six games on the road with a pair of road games in the Midwest next week.
