CSUB Headed to Libby Matson Tournament

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Week 2 of softball season is underway and the CSU Bakersfield Roadrunners have been preparing to utilize their opening-week lessons to roll into their next competition. The `Runners are headed to Stockton, Calif. this weekend for four games at Pacific's Libby Matson Tournament, Feb. 15-16.

CSUB opened the 2020 season with a tough challenge last weekend, taking on UCLA's Stacy Winsberg Memorial Tournament. The Bruins, who are the defending National Champions, came into the season ranked No. 4 in the country and came out hot against the `Runners in the season opener. The second time around, Bakersfield's bats came alive and the `Runners hung with UCLA despite falling 8-4. On the weekend, CSUB went 0-5 with a pair of losses against UCLA and defeats at the hands of Pittsburgh, San Diego, and Cal Poly.

Bakersfield's offensive highlights of the tournament came from the `Runner middle infielders. Coming off an All-Conference junior season, shortstop Cydney Curran continued swinging the bat well in Los Angeles, where she posted a .400 batting average with two runs, a double, a walk, and two stolen bases on the week. Meanwhile, junior college transfer Samantha Martinez exploded in her `Runner debut week, batting .455 while slugging 1.000 thanks to a pair of home runs.

The `Runners will kick off the Libby Matson Tournament this week with a pair of games on Saturday. CSUB will open play against a very familiar foe in CSUN as the teams will be meeting for the 64th time in the all-time series. Bakersfield will close out the first day of competition with the tournament host, Pacific, which started the season 3-1 at Cal State Fullerton's tournament last week.

On Sunday morning, the `Runners will get a rematch with CSUN before closing out their time in Northern California with a contest against Nevada. The Wolfpack traveled down to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico last week and dropped five games against tough competition including Oregon, Oklahoma, BYU, Utah Valley, and Long Beach State.

A live stream of Bakersfield's clash with Pacific will be available while live stats should be available throughout the tournament. For links to both options, visit the CSUB softball schedule page. Fans can also follow @CSUB_Softball on Twitter (link above) for live updates.
