Austin Ties Career-High in Loss vs Santa Clara

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Senior Vanessa Austin tied her career-high in points with twenty-two against the visiting Santa Clara Broncos, but it wasn't enough to fuel the Roadrunners to a win Friday night. Bakersfield could not overcome a double-digit fourth quarter deficit and lost the home opener, 59-49.

For the third straight game, Austin finished the contest over fifty percent from the field. The Salt Lake City, Utah native went 8-of-12 on the night and added a game-best eight rebounds two steals and one monstrous block. Redshirt junior Jayden Eggleston was CSUB's second leading scorer at eight points while Miracle Saxon grabbed second-most rebounds (7) in the contest. Santa Clara had a pair of double figure scorers in Lexie Pritchard (16) and Lindsey VanAllen (10).

Sophomore Makenzie Bond got her first appearance of the season and chipped in four points, two rebounds and an assist in five minutes of action. Junior transfer Solmilena Herrera finished the game with a contest-high two blocks, she leads the team in blocked shots.

First Quarter

Bakersfield scored first off of an elbow jumper from Eggleston before a three-point play gave the Broncos their first lead. CSUB regained and extended its lead to seven in the first period before Santa Clara tied the game at twelve apiece. Graduate senior Andie Easley put the `Runners up two points with a left-handed driving layup as the shot clock and quarter expired.

Second Quarter

Santa Clara tied the game, then took the lead in the first minute and a half of the second quarter and never looked back. Eighteen percent from the field compared to the Broncos fifty-three percent shooting gave way for a lopsided period and the Roadrunners found themselves down six points at halftime.

Third Quarter

Saxon opened the quarter with a basket to stop a Santa Clara scoring run. CSUB strung together quality possessions and found themselves within three of the Broncos at the third period media timeout. A matched period in points, Santa Clara took a six-point lead into the final period.

Fourth Quarter

Santa Clara opened the fourth quarter with a pair of made free throws and would continue to extend their lead to as large as thirteen points with six minutes left on the clock. The only trey of the night from CSUB came in the last four minutes of the fourth period when redshirt junior Jasmin Dixon brought the game within ten. Santa Clara would hold their double-digit lead and win, 59-49.

Next Game

The Roadrunners (1-2) are back on the road for their fourth non-conference game slated for next Thursday. CSUB is scheduled to compete against Central Valley foe Fresno State at the Save Mart Center in Fresno, Calif.
