`Runner Rally Comes Up Short Against CBU

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A 49-point second half helped CSU Bakersfield climb back into Wednesday night's Western Athletic Conference home game against California Baptist. Despite the surge in the final 20 minutes, the Roadrunners were unable to overcome a 14-point halftime deficit, dropping the game in the Icardo Center, 83-75.

"I thought we had a good game and our good game wasn't good enough," said Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners. "I saw a lot of resilience and a lot of fight, but we also showed we've got work to do."

Redshirt junior guard De'Monte Buckingham posted his second-straight 20+-point performance, finishing Wednesday's contest with 23 points on 8-of-15 shooting. Fellow `Runner Taze Moore also tallied 23 points against the Lancers, a new career-high for the guard who also pulled down seven rebounds.

Junior guard Czar Perry scored 14 points on the night while chipping in seven assists and four steals for Bakersfield. As a team, CSUB shot 43% from the field and 44% from three-point range. The CBU game marked the fifth-straight contest Bakersfield converted 40% or better from behind the arc, a feat no other CSUB team has accomplished at the Division I level.

For just the third time this season, the `Runners lost the rebounding battle as the Lancers grabbed 37 boards to Bakersfield's 29. Late attempts to stop the clock sent CBU to the free throw line and the Lancers knocked down 28-of-34 (82.4%) free throws on the game and 20-of-24 in the second half alone to help stall the `Runner comeback.

Bakersfield came storming into the game, taking an early, 7-0 lead on its visitor in the first half. CBU slowly chipped away at the CSUB lead and took a 15-14 lead about 10 minutes into the period. After the `Runners led 19-18, the Lancers went on to finish the first half on a 21-6 run and take a 40-26 lead into halftime.

The `Runners answered back with a big push to start the second half. CSUB pulled within one point about five minutes into the period when a layup by Moore made the score 45-46. Bakersfield would not get that close again as CBU gained back some separation and converted its free throws down the stretch to hold the `Runners off for the road win.

CSUB (7-10, 1-1 WAC) has eight days to prepare for its next matchup. The `Runners are headed out on a road trip, Jan. 16-18, with stops scheduled in Kansas City and Chicago.
