Edler-Davis Explodes in Overtime to Defeat KC

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A back and forth battle ended up in overtime where CSU Bakersfield's Justin Edler-Davis exploded for 13 of his career-high 25 points to push his squad past Kansas City. The Roadrunners (8-10, 2-1 WAC) surged in overtime to claim a 74-64 win on Thursday and hand the Roos (9-10, 2-3 WAC) their first home loss of the season.

After Edler-Davis experienced a slow start to the season in terms of shooting, Rod Barnes, Head Coach of the `Runners, commented earlier this week that he expected Bakersfield's co-captain to find his stroke soon. Edler-Davis rose to the occasion and his coach had high praises for him after the game: "Justin has put in the work. It was a huge effort from him. He stayed positive the whole game. That's the leadership we've been looking for and we got it at the right time tonight."

Barnes continued on to talk about the gritty play of the `Runners in Kansas City: "Our guys fought and believed that we could win the game. It was a hard fight and a gutsy win. The leadership of Justin Davis and the play of De'Monte Buckingham helped us win tonight. It was a huge win for us on the road and I'm really proud of our team."

A redshirt junior from San Diego, Calif., Edler-Davis finished with 25 points, five rebounds, and two blocks against Kansas City. Buckingham, Bakersfield's other co-captain, added 16 points, six boards, and a pair of assists. Junior forward Justin McCall tallied eight points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Point guard Czar Perry played 43 of the game's 45 minutes and chipped in six assists, six rebounds, and three steals.

Bakersfield came out of the gate with a fast start, turning offense into defense to the tune of a 15-3 early lead. The `Runners hit their first nine field goal attempts of the game and continued to balloon their lead to as many as 14 points at 28-14. Kansas City rallied for a strong final four minutes and limited the damage to just a seven-point deficit at halftime.

Hot shooting and strong defense catalyzed Bakersfield's 33-26 lead at the break, but the one vice that kept the `Runners from running away with the game was nine first-half turnovers. The `Runner defense tallied eight steals and four blocks in the opening period while CSUB shot the lights out. Bakersfield converted 12-of-18 field goals (.667) and 4-of-5 three-pointers (.800) on its way to halftime.

Kansas City opened the second half with an 11-0 run, taking a 37-33 lead just over four minutes into the period. After battling to keep the game tight, the `Runners regained the lead on a pair of Buckingham free throws with 3:16 left on the clock. Kansas City took the lead right back on a pair of free throws of its own as the battled continued to rage in the Swinney Center.

The Roos gained a 56-54 lead on a tip-in layup, but Shawn Stith sank a pair of free throws with 53.0 seconds to tie the score. Kansas City had a chance for the game-winning shot, but the `Runner defense stifled the Roos and forced overtime.

After scoring 12 points in regulation, Edler-Davis heated up and hit 4-of-5 shots, including 3-of-4 three-pointers, on his way to 13 points in just five minutes of overtime. Bakersfield's defense rode the momentum his offense provided to lock down the Roos to the tune of 3-of-9 shooting in the period as the `Runners cruised to a 10-point victory in extra time.

With the win, CSUB improved to 2-1 in Western Athletic Conference play. The `Runners are headed to Chicago on Friday to prepare for their Saturday matchup with Chicago State (4-16, 0-5 WAC). Tipoff in the Jones Convocation Center is scheduled for noon (CT).
