CSUB Swims to Winning Seasons at Fresno Pacific

Bakersfield, Calif. – Both CSU Bakersfield Swimming and Diving teams locked up winning seasons with a dual meet sweep of Fresno Pacific on Saturday. Kris Rogic and Mikayla Popham each won four events as the Roadrunner men and women knocked of their Sunbird counterparts by scores of 198-84 and 200-81, respectively, on a cold and rainy day in Fresno.

"The conditions were a factor today and we've been working the teams hard in preparation for WAC Championships," said CSUB Director of Swimming and Diving Chris Hansen. "Our kids absolutely rose to the occasion and delivered a great effort and great results."

Popham opened the event swimming the freestyle leg on Bakersfield's 200 Medley Relay team, which took first place in a time of 1:48.05.  The freshman added individual victories in the 200 Free (1:54.31), the 500 Free (5:04.06) and the 200 IM (2:08.20), directly contributing 38 points towards the Roadrunner cause.

Rogic matched Popham's effort with individual victories in the 200 Free (1:41.84), the 200 Back (1:52.05) and the 200 IM (1:53.24), while also anchoring the men's 400 Freestyle Relay. Rogic posted the relay's fastest split leading the group to a time of 3:04.40.

In a thrilling 200 Free Rogic got to the wall just ahead of his `Runner teammate Ryan Brimer. Brimer's time of 1:41.91 was just 0.07 seconds off his teammate's pace. He added a second runner-up finish in the 100 Free (46.46).

Loren Gillilan continued his strong season with another victory in the 100 Fly. He clocked a time of 48.90 to win the race by over three full seconds before adding a second-place finish in the 100 Back (50.35).

For the second straight meet Noah Hultner captured the 1000 Free, shaving over four seconds off his winning time from the dual with UC Santa Cruz, while fellow senior Richie Campbell took first in the 50 Free for the second time in three meets. Hultner would add a second-place finish in the 500 Free.

Sam Ybarra and Bryan Perez each picked up their first individual victories of their careers against Fresno Pacific. Ybarra captured the 200 Fly in a time of 1:54.25 to edge teammate Benji Duenas and post a personal best. Perez put up a personal best of 4:40.67 to win the 500 Free.

Alex Dragan posted a 58.59 in the 100 Breast and a 2:09.07 in the 200 Breast to contribute a pair of second-place finishes.

On the women's side, Autumn D'Arcy joined Popham in winning multiple events. She swam to victory in both the 50 Free (24.19) and 100 Fly (56.58) to win her 21st and 22nd races of the season. The victory in the 100 Fly was her seventh in the event this season. She remains one win shy of Paola Hernandez' season-best win total for a Roadrunner swimmer or diver at the DI level.

Sophomore Tabea Mose continued her strong season with a win in the 100 Back (58.10). She now has individual victories in three of the team's last four competitions. She also finished second in the 100 Free (54.14).

Both Mose and D'Arcy joined Popham on the victorious 200 medley relay team.

Jayssie Haynes returned to her winning ways when she picked up the 35th individual win of her career in the 1000 Free. She posted a 10:30.98 to outlast teammate and reigning WAC Swimmer of the Week Ariane Skeggs. Skeggs posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the 1000 Free (10:33.92) and the 500 Free (5:14.15).

The depth of the `Runner women was on display once again as Taylor Budshaw, Alyssa Madero and Courtney Linton all posted their first victories of the season.

Budshaw won the 200 Fly in a season-best time of 2:09.20, while Courtney Linton posted a career-best 53.93 to take the 100 Free. Madero improved upon her second-place finish in the 200 Back against UC Santa Cruz, winning this week in a time of 2:08.25.

Linton also finished second in the 50 Free getting home just behind D'Arcy in 24.19.

Senior Lea Salcido swam one of her best races of the season adding a second-place finish in the 100 Back to the team's cause. She hit the wall in 59.23 to post a season best time in the event.

Eliana Klubnikin swam to second place in both the 100 Breast and the 200 Breast in times of 1:06.75 and 2:24.37, respectively.

Bakersfield took three of the four diving events.

Adam Estrella won his fourth event of the last three weeks when he scored a 275.40 in the 3-meter event, while sophomore Nate Cummins gave the `Runner men a sweep in the diving well collecting his first win of the season with a 261.20 on the 1-meter board.

Lauren Carson took first in the 1-meter board for the women. She posted a final score of 222.50 to capture her second-straight win in the event.

The Roadrunner men finished the season with a dual meet record of 4-2, while the women wrapped up with a mark of 5-4. Both teams are now off until the WAC Championship meet begins on February 26.
