Swimming Wraps Regular Season at Fresno Pacific

Bakersfield, Calif. –  The CSU Bakersfield swimming and diving teams will wrap up their respective regular season schedules when they travel to Fresno Pacific on Jan. 18. The Roadrunners swept UC Santa Cruz on Senior Day and carry a lot of momentum into this weekend's dual meet, while the Sunbirds are set to compete for the first time since participating in the UNLV Invite on Dec. 15-17.

"We have one goal this weekend," said CSUB Director of Swimming Chris Hansen. "And that is to continue to swim well and finish the season with a winning record for both of our teams."

The CSUB men and women won every swimming event and all four diving competitions in cruising past UCSC on Jan. 11. Seventeen different `Runners captured individual event titles in the process as the teams enjoyed one of their most dominating meets of the season.

The task will be much tougher this weekend against Fresno Pacific as Bakersfield continues to grind through its preparation for the Western Athletic Conference Championship meet in February.

"Fresno Pacific has a great team and we've been training as hard as we have all year over the past few weeks," said Hansen. "Success this weekend will require everyone stepping up and giving great effort and focus to the team result."

Loren Gilillan will help set the tone for the Roadrunner men. Gilillan has posted five individual victories in five different events over the past two meets. He captured titles in the 100 Fly, the 200 Fly and the 100 Free against UC San Diego two weeks ago, before winning the 200 Free and the 200 IM against UCSC. He illustrated his versatility even further by adding a second-place finish in the 500 Free against the Banana Slugs.

Junior Kris Rogic swam only the 500 Free against UCSC and out-touched Gillilan in the event despite swimming it for the first time in his career. A week earlier, Rogic swam a full load and won both the 200 Back and the 200 IM en route to earning WAC Swimmer of the Week accolades for the first-time in his career.

Alex Dragan earned WAC honorable mention in this week's conference press release after winning both breaststroke disciplines against UCSC. Dragan posted a time of 58.38 to take the 100 Breast before turning in an impressive 2:08.62 to get home first in the 200 Breast. He was matched by Benji Duengas who won both butterfly events as part of his work load against UC Santa Cruz.

Ryan Brimer posted a second-place finish in the 100 Back against the Banana Slugs. He's likely to find himself swimming the more familiar freestyle events this weekend at Fresno Pacific. He posted a pair of podium finishes against UC San Diego a week earlier when he clocked a 46.39 and a 1:41.54 to finish second and third in the 100 Free and 200 Free, respectively.

Diver Adam Estrella heads to Fresno a winner in three-straight diving events for CSUB. He captured the 1m title against UCSD, before sweeping the diving events against Santa Cruz. In the meet with the Banana Slugs he set new personal bests in both diving disciplines. With a big score on the 1m board against FPU he could re-set his personal best for the third straight week.

On the women's side usual suspects Autumn D'Arcy, Jayssie Haynes and Mikayla Popham continue to rack up top times, but the team's depth has become evident over the past few weeks.

Veterans Maddie Cosgrove and Tabea Mose have combined for five individual victories dating back to a New Year's Eve meet with San Jose State. Cosgrove has won three-straight races in the 200 Fly, while Mose won the 100 Back against the Spartans and the 50 Free versus UCSC.

Adding further to the cause is sophomore Ariane Skeggs, the reigning WAC Women's Swimmer of the Week. Skeggs grabbed wins against UCSC in both the 200 Free and the 500 Free.

D'Arcy won three more individual events against UC Santa Cruz. She has now won 20 races this season, matching her total from her freshman season in Bakersfield. With three wins at Fresno Pacific, D'Arcy would match Paola Hernandez for the most wins in a single season for a CSUB women's swimmer or diver at the Division I level.

Popham enters the weekend with 11 wins of her own this season. She proved herself as an entirely well-rounded swimmer when she won both backstroke events against UCSC last weekend. The native of Australia has wins in seven different events this season and has racked up at least a pair of wins in each of her last three outings.

Senior Jayssie Haynes has turned in five season-best times over the past two weeks. She is swimming as well as she has all season despite already winning races in the 200 Breast, the 200 Free, the 100 Free and the 400 IM earlier this year. She has finished either first or second on 14 occasions to date.

Lauren Carson continues to lead the CSUB female divers. Carson captured the first two wins of her career against UCSC when she swept both boards.

Following this weekend's dual, the CSUB swimming and diving teams will continue preparations for the WAC Championships in earnest. WAC Championship swimming and diving preliminaries begin on Feb. 26 in Houston, Tex.
