Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Hot Shooting Gives `Runners 2-0 WAC Road Trip

CHICAGO – Hot shooting guided the CSU Bakersfield men's basketball team to its second-straight road victory on Sunday afternoon. The Roadrunners surged past the Chicago State Cougars for a 72-54 win to wrap up an unblemished road trip with a 3-1 Western Athletic Conference record.

Both teams shot well early on with the host Cougars pushing back after every `Runner basket. CSUB used a 9-0 run down the stretch of the first half to gain a 36-26 lead with less than two minutes remaining. The `Runners went to the locker room leading 38-30 thanks to nine points each from Cam Allen and Justin Edler-Davis.

In the first half, CSUB shot 50-percent from the field and 55-percent from three-point range. Greg Lee, a junior forward, did a little bit of everything with six points, two rebounds, two assists, and two steals in the first 20 minutes.

Bakersfield opened the second half with a strong start, building its lead back up to 15 points in the first four minutes. The Cougars rallied to pull as close as six points at 60-54, but the `Runners locked down, finishing the final eight minutes of the game on a 12-0 run to solidify their 72-54 victory.

Lee, who hails from Rockford, Ill., less than 100 miles from Chicago, tallied 13 of his career-high 19 points in the second half. Allen, Bakersfield's point guard, equaled Lee's game-high scoring effort while chipping in three assists against the Cougars. Junior center Ronne Readus added six points and six rebounds on Sunday.

As a team, the `Runners shot 51-percent from the field while knocking down 47.1-percent of their three-point attempts. With the effort, CSUB has now converted on 40-percent or better from behind the arc in seven-straight games, a program best in its Division I era (since 2007-08). Bakersfield also nearly doubled Chicago State's rebounding effort, 33-17, while dominating the pant, 32-16.

The `Runners (9-10, 3-1 WAC) have completed their first WAC road trip of the season and will return to the comforts of the Icardo Center to host a pair of games next week. On Thursday, Jan. 23, CSUB will clash with Utah Valley before hosting Seattle U on Saturday, Jan. 25. Tipoff for both games is set for 7 p.m. on the blue Kern Schools Court.
