Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

CSUB Unable to Overcome Deficit

SAN JOSE, Calif. – A win or a tie to open conference was the focal point for CSU Bakersfield's men's soccer team in their road match on Saturday, but San Jose State had the same objective and were prepared to make that difficult.

The first half was relatively quiet, outside the game's only goal that came in the 16th minute. Nicolas Brenes snuck one past CSUB's goalie off a cross from Omar Lemus for his first goal of the season. SJSU held a slight edge in shots (8-7) and saves (4-3) in the opening period.

San Jose State took advantage of their opportunities in the second half early on, scoring on two of their first three shots. Omar Lemus played a cross to Danny Sanchez in the 48th minute. Brenes then took a pass from Rudy Castro and booted in SJSU's third goal of the evening in the 58th minute.

Bakersfield finally broke through in the 58th minute as Carlos Armendariz scored his third goal on the season off a free kick. It was in the 73rd minute that CSUB scored again when Ricardo Soza tallied his first goal of the season and brought the Roadrunners within reach but they were unable to equalize in the last eighteen minutes of the match.

Although Bakersfield has yet to drop a match by more than one goal this year, without the equalizer tonight, CSUB (1-6, 0-1 WAC) heads home without a conference point and on a three-game losing streak.

The men return to the pitch next weekend for a pair of league matches at Main Soccer Field when the `Runners welcome UNLV and Grand Canyon.
