CSUB Wraps Roadrunner Classic with 2-1 Record

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A strong effort during its home tournament helped the CSU Bakersfield volleyball team finish the Roadrunner Classic with a 2-1 record on Saturday. The `Runners carried the momentum from Friday's win over San Francisco into a 3-1 victory over a talented UC Davis squad. Fresno State handed CSUB its only loss of the weekend on Saturday night, but the `Runners enjoyed a successful weekend of volleyball.

"We're learning a lot still, but I thought our determination and our heart in the first two matches was definitely better," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. With two wins under their belt this weekend, Melo's `Runners are headed on the road next weekend to begin Western Athletic Conference play.

Melo went on to say she wants her team to remember this tournament, the good and the bad, and be better for it: "I don't even want to wipe this one away; I want our team to learn from it. In the WAC, any day at any moment, any team can beat us. We have to learn from this and not let something like this happen again. We have to continue to get better, we have to get a little bit more consistent. We have a great team, we just have to play up to our level."

CSUB 3, UC Davis 1

UC Davis came into Friday morning's match with a 7-4 record and a strong resume. The `Runners did not back down from the challenge and went toe-to-toe with the taller Aggie squad. CSUB came out swinging and earned a 25-18 victory in the first set, capped by an emphatic block from sophomores Brooke Boiseau and Milica Vukobrat.

The Aggies gained a lead late in Set 2, pulling ahead 23-19, but CSUB put together a 4-1 run to pull within one point. The `Runners were unable to finish the comeback as Davis tied the match at one set apiece with a 25-23 win.

Bakersfield jumped out to a quick, 7-2 lead in the third set and never looked back. CSUB won 13 of the final 18 points, surging to a dominant, 25-14 victory and gaining a 2-1 lead on the match.

The `Runners fell behind the Aggies early in Set 4, but Bakersfield was determined not to go to Set 5. Trailing 14-18, CSUB went on a 6-2 run, tying the match at 20-20 on a kill from Vukobrat. Sophomore Hayley McCluskey heated up, tallying three more kills through the end of the fourth game including the match-winner at 25-23.

Vukobrat, a native of Serbia, tallied a season-high 12 kills in the win over UC Davis while adding a career-high eight blocks. Sophomore setter Leisa Elisaia recorded a double-double with 20 assists and 14 digs in Friday's first match while Boiseau and senior Rafa Bonifacio each chipped in nine kills.

CSUB 0, Fresno State 3

The Bulldogs came out swinging in the opening set, leaping to a 15-4 lead early on. CSUB responded well, trading points evenly with Fresno State after that, but the fast start helped the Bulldogs to a 25-15 win to open the match.

Fresno State found itself leading CSUB 15-4 again thanks to another quick start in Set 2. The `Runners rallied again, but found themselves unable to erase the deficit and the Bulldogs won 25-16.

The third set fared more evenly, but a late run helped Fresno State pull away as the Bulldogs finished off the match in straight sets on another 25-16 win.

Sophomore Emily Hansen led the `Runners with seven kills and three blocks against CSUB's cross-valley rival. Boiseau, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., chipped in five kills and three blocks while junior libero Jojo Ishida tallied 14 digs.

Next Week

The `Runners (5-7) have wrapped up their non-conference schedule and will embark on their first WAC road trip of the season next week. CSUB will start out at Kansas City on Thursday, Sept. 26, before concluding the road swing at Chicago State on Saturday, Sept. 28.
