Kansas City Takes WAC Opener From `Runners

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A pair of back and forth sets to open Thursday night's Western Athletic Conference-opening match did not go in favor of CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team and the Roadrunners eventually fell in straights sets to Kansas City on the road.

"We need to be more focused and discipline," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball.

Kansas City held a 15-10 lead over CSUB at the media timeout in the first set. The `Runners fought back with three-straight points out of the break, but another strong push by the Roos helped KC take a 25-17 win.

After another tight game early in Set 2, the Roos pulled away from the `Runners, building a 16-10 lead. CSUB pulled within three points at 16-19 on a Jojo Ishida ace, but KC proved to be too much again. The Roos extended their lead on the match to two sets with a 25-19 win.

Staying hot, the Roos jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the third set. The `Runners got back on track and began trading points with their hosts, but KC finished off the match with a 25-14 win in the final game.

CSUB's pair of setters, sophomore Leisa Elisaia and redshirt senior Sidney Wicks, each tallied a double-double on Thursday night. Elisaia's 10 assists and 12 digs gave the native of South Jordan, Utah her team-high fifth double-double of the season. Sophomore Hayley McCluskey led all `Runners with eight kills while redshirt freshman Hana Makonova chipped in five kills and three blocks.

The `Runners (5-8, 0-1 WAC) will leave Kansas City and head to Chicago on Friday to close out their Midwest swing with a match on Saturday. CSUB and Chicago State are set to clash in the Windy City with first serve schedule for 10 a.m. (PT). There will not be a live stream and, most likely, no live stats on Saturday.
