CSUB Suffers Pair of Losses in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A pair of valiant efforts came up just short for CSU Bakersfield's volleyball team on Friday as the Roadrunners opened the 2019 season with two losses. After falling to Nevada in the first match of the year, CSUB forced a fifth set against Hornet Invitational host Sacramento State, but the `Runners eventually dropped the road match.

"We need to be more consistent," said Giovana Melo, CSUB's Director of Volleyball. "We are doing some great things, but not for long periods of time."

CSUB 1, Nevada 3 (25-21, 14-25, 16-25, 21-25)

Despite falling behind early in Set 1, CSUB rallied and earned a 25-21 victory to kick off the season. The Bakersfield offense was well-balanced with five `Runners posting two or more kills in the opening game. Redshirt sophomore Brooke Boiseau and junior Emily Hansen led the way with four kills apiece while redshirt senior Sidney Wicks chipped in seven assists and four digs.

Nevada responded aggressively, winning the next two sets in dominating fashion. Hansen was the bright side of the second set as the Bakersfield native added four more kills while hitting .583 to that point. In Set 3, the `Runners hit better, but still struggled to get the offense rolling.

In the fourth set, the `Runners and Wolfpack ran neck and neck all the way to a 15-16 score. Nevada ran off five-straight points to gain some separation, but CSUB answered back, scoring four points in a row to keep its hopes alive. Alas, Nevada held off Bakersfield's efforts to force a fifth set with a 21-25 win to end the match.

Hansen tied her career-high with 12 kills to lead all `Runners while Boiseau added 10 kills in the season opener. Sophomore Hayley McCluskey also chipped in career-highs with nine kills and eight digs on Friday. Wicks, a native of Aurora, Colo., posted the 13th double-double of her career with 26 assists and 11 digs.

CSUB 2, Sacramento State 3 (19-25, 25-19, 20-25, 25-19, 11-15)

The `Runners and Hornets traded blows in the first two sets with each team earning a 25-19 victory. Sacramento State went ahead 2-1 in the match with a 20-25 win in Set 3, but this time around, the `Runners would not be denied a fifth set.

Bakersfield won Set 4, 25-19, with a team hitting percentage of .195. CSUB's offense maintained its well-balanced attack with `Runners up and down the lineup contributing to the win. For the first time in the young season, CSUB found itself headed to the fifth and deciding set.

The final set remained close with Sacramento State gaining a slight edge at 9-6. Later, back-to-back attack errors by the `Runners put the Hornets ahead 13-8, but McCluskey recorded a pair of kills to help CSUB stay close. In the end, Sacramento State held on for a 15-11 win in Set 5 and claimed the 3-2 victory on the match.

Boiseau, a native of Scottsdale, Ariz., came up just three kills shy of her career-high with 17 in Friday's second match. Rafa Bonifacio, a senior outside hitter, tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 13 digs against the Hornets.

Bakersfield's setting duo of Wicks and Leisa Elisaia recorded 25 and 22 assists, respectively. Redshirt freshman Hana Makonova, playing in just her second collegiate match, chipped in eight kills and five blocks in Sacramento.

The `Runners (0-2) will wrap up their time in the state capitol with one more match on Saturday. CSUB and Canisius are slated to clash with first serve at 11 a.m. The Griffins opened their season with a split, falling to Sacramento State 0-3, but defeating Nevada in five sets.
