Sekona Ties Aces Record, `Runners Fall to Canisius

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A CSU Bakersfield Division I record for aces in a match by junior Mapuhola Sekona was not enough on Saturday as the Roadrunner volleyball team fell against Canisius in a five-set loss (19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 19-25, 8-15) to close the Hornet Invitational.

"I am not happy with the results of the weekend, but I am happy with the resilience we showed," said Giovana Melo, Head Coach of the `Runners. "We just need to get back to work on Monday."

Canisius jumped out to a quick, 8-3 lead in the opening set and continued to surge, claiming a 19-10 advantage along the way. The Griffins held off a late advance by the `Runners to earn a 25-19 victory in Set 1. Redshirt freshman Hana Makonova was a perfect 4-for-4 on attack attempts in the first game of the match.

Set 2 was a back and forth battle with Canisius gaining a narrow lead at 18-14. Bakersfield responded by rattling off six-straight points, capped by a Brooke Boiseau service ace, to take a 20-18 lead. CSUB got clutch kills from sophomores Milica Vukobrat and Hayley McCluskey down the stretch and Makonova put volleyballs on the floor for the final two points as Bakersfield earned a 25-22 win.

After the `Runners led through the majority of Set 3, Canisius went on a 6-0 run to take a 20-17 lead. Unfazed by the deficit, Bakersfield rallied to win the final eight points of the set and take a 2-1 lead on the match. The impressive surge included four aces from Sekona, a junior college transfer, as well as a pair of kills from Vukobrat.

The Griffins rallied to take a 25-19 win in the fourth set, sending CSUB to the fifth set for the second-straight match. In the deciding set, Canisius leaped out to an 8-2 advantage, but another run spurred by two more aces from Sekona kept the `Runners in the match. The Griffins finished strong and won the match with a 15-8 victory over the `Runners.

For the second time in as many days, McCluskey increased her career-high in kills, posting 14 against the Griffins. Sekona tied CSUB's Division I record with seven aces in a single match. In another repeat performance, setters Sidney Wicks and Leisa Elisaia each added 20+ assists for the `Runners. Boiseau earned All-Tournament honors after leading CSUB with 2.64 kills and 0.79 blocks per set and a .228 hitting percentage on the weekend.

Bakersfield (0-3) has wrapped up its time in Sacramento and will return home to prepare for another tournament next weekend. The `Runners are set to square off with Fresno State, Santa Clara, and CSUN at the Fresno State Invitational, Sept. 5-6.
