Golden Goal Sends Bakersfield Past UC Riverside

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A pair of freshmen got the job done tonight for CSU Bakersfield in the first of two get back games this weekend at the Main Soccer Field. Bakersfield downed UC Riverside for the first time in three seasons with a 2-1 double-overtime win. Bakersfield was on the scoreboard first in the first half when senior Sophie Freeman sent a free kick from behind the midline into striking territory and Chelsee Duran headed it into the Highlanders' goal box. An aggressive and swarming defense held UCR scoreless through the remainder of the first half while a collective team effort to "win the first ball on long services" helped the Roadrunners control the attack and hold possession for most of the match.

A scramble in the box late in the second period led to Alexandra Hargrave chipping the ball past CSUB keeper. Bakersfield was able to make a few more scoring opportunities in the last two minutes of the contest but weren't able to find that breakthrough goal and a golden goal.

We finished the game with seven freshmen on the field," added head coach Sebastian Vecchio. "We have told them from the beginning that we can't win without seniors, returners, newcomers, or freshmen."

Neither team was able to find the back of the net in the first overtime period, but in the 105th minute of the second overtime period Aryana Harvey was able to get a foot on the ball and find Jaden Skinner who tapped in her second goal of the season.

"I thought it was a great performance from beginning to end," said Vecchio. "I like the way we competed for 105 minutes. We were able to throw different combinations at them and every player that came off the bench made a contribution and even the ones that didn't come in made a contribution and stayed engaged – our bench never dropped."
