Roadrunners Dominate WAC Leaders

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – With Edgar Barclay putting forth a dominating performance on the mound, the CSU Bakersfield baseball bats exploded for six runs in the fifth inning and cruised to an 8-1 victory over the Western Athletic Conference-leading Vaqueros of The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

Barclay (6-4) was nearly unhittable on Friday night at Hardt Field.  The junior allowed just two hits over seven shutout innings and struck out a career-high 12 batters in his 12th start of the year.  Barclay tied the school record for most strikeouts by a CSUB pitcher at home and his 12 Ks are tied for third in single-game history and just one shy of the record.  On the season, it is his fifth 10+ strikeout performance and he became just the second Roadrunner in history to record over 100 strikeouts in one season.  Barclay's 104 Ks on the year are second to Mike McCarthy's 116 set in 2011.

The offense spotted the left-hander a smidgen of wiggle room in the third when Ryan Koch singled down the left field line to score Evan Berkey, who walked earlier in the inning.

CSUB (20-31, 8-14 WAC) really got things going in the sixth.  Jake Ortega hit a shot off the wall to start the inning with a double and Jesse Rowley quickly made it 3-0 with a deep drive over the right field fence for his second homer of the season.  With one out, Bakersfield loaded the bases with a Damian Henderson walk and singles by Tyler Jorgensen and Jassen Oliver.  Daniel Carrizosa made it 5-0 with the third-straight base hit, and Berkey capped the explosion with a base hit to score Carrizosa and Oliver with two outs.

The `Runner offense produced 14 hits on the night, led by Noah Barba's three singles.  Berkey, Ortega, Koch and Jorgensen all had a pair of hits, and all nine starters reached base safely.

CSUB needs just one more victory to clinch its final home series of the season.  The series will continue tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. and Sunday at 12:00 p.m. Bakersfield has won every home series this season and no team in school history has ever completed a perfect sweep of series victories at Hardt Field.
