`Runners Win Sixth Straight Home Series

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the second consecutive day, it was a dramatic ninth inning at Hardt Field.  With two outs and the tying run on third base, CSU Bakersfield's Noah Cordova struck out a Utah Valley Wolverine to earn his first career victory and preserve a 7-6 win for the Roadrunners.  Damian Henderson hit a walk-off, three-run home run to win the game for Bakersfield last night as the `Runners won their sixth straight series at home.

Cordova (1-4) was brilliant on Sunday.  He entered the game in some trouble in the fifth inning.  The Wolverines had already scored four times in the frame and had the bases loaded with just one out when he got the call from CSUB Head Coach Jeremy Beard.  The junior struck out the first Utah Valley hitter he faced and got a groundball to third to get out of the jam.  He didn't allow a hit in the sixth or the seventh before working around two singles in the eighth.  Cordova pitched the final 4.2 innings without allowing a run and struck out a career-high six batters.  Earlier in the week against UC Santa Barbara, the Gilbert Ariz. native didn't allow an earned run in 4.1 innings pitched against the sixth-ranked Gauchos.

The CSUB (19-27, 7-11) offense was hot early, scoring two runs in the first, third and fourth innings. Eric Charles led off the game with a walk and came around to score on a wild pitch later in the inning.  Sergio Robles made it 2-0 after the first inning when he singled home Jake Ortega, who also singled earlier in the inning.

Charles continued to be a catalyst in the third as he doubled to start the inning.  The `Runners would then get consecutive singles by Noah Barba, Ortega and Jesse Rowley to make the score 4-0 in favor of the home team.  Utah Valley cut the lead in half in the top of the fourth, but Bakersfield matched them in the bottom of the inning.

Henderson singled with one out in the fourth and Daniel Carrizosa executed a hit and run play to perfection with a base hit through the right side to move him to third.  Charles knocked in the left fielder with a groundout to second and Barba doubled home Carrizosa to put CSUB ahead 6-2.

After the Wolverines tied the game in the fifth, the Roadrunners took advantage of a Utah Valley miscue to score the game-winning run in the sixth.  Henderson was hit by a pitch to start the inning and was bunted into scoring position by Carrizosa.  He moved to third on a wild pitch and came around to score on an error by the Wolverine defense on a Charles popup on the infield.

Barba, Ortega and Rowley all had two hits to lead the offense and Charles and Henderson scored a pair of runs.

Roman Angelo didn't receive a decision in his second straight Sunday start.  The freshman allowed seven hits and six runs in 4.1 innings pitched.

The Roadrunners will take their show on the road next week when they travel to UCSB at 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday and head to Grand Canyon for a three-game Western Athletic Conference series beginning Friday night.
