Roadrunners Blow Out Bears to Win Series

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Needing a victory on Saturday to extend its home series winning streak to five, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team needed just seven innings to beat Northern Colorado 16-4 in the three-game Western Athletic Conference series finale.

The game was never in doubt as the `Runners (17-24, 5-10 WAC) scored at least two runs in all six at-bats on Saturday.  CSUB jumped ahead 3-0 after the first inning and 5-0 after the second.  It was already 11-0 in favor of the home team before the Bears scored four times in the top of the fifth.  Bakersfield answered with two in the bottom of the frame and three more in the sixth to win via the 10-run rule.

Six of the nine CSUB starters had multiple hits as the Roadrunners tied a season-high with 17 safeties.  The bottom four batters of the lineup were particularly successful.  Sergio Robles, Tyler Jorgensen, Will Picketts and Daniel Carrizosa combined for nine hits, eight runs scored and five RBI.  Jorgensen was 3-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored all by himself.  Not to be outdone, Jesse Rowley went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI from the No. 3 spot in the order.  The first baseman added three stolen bases on the day, which is just one shy of the school record.

Bakersfield native Roman Angelo was solid in his first start at Hardt Field.  The freshman struck out five and didn't allow a run until the fifth inning.  Andrew Ciandro picked up his first win of the season after retiring all four batters he faced and Mario Lopez chucked a perfect seventh to finish off the Bears.

The CSUB pitching staff had a strikeout in 25 of the 26 innings this weekend and totaled 38 over the three-game set.  For the season, the Roadrunners have struck out 374 batters and are just 12 shy of the school record of 386.

The Roadrunners will take tomorrow off before welcoming No. 7 UC Santa Barbara to Hardt Field on Monday at 6:00 p.m.
