`Runners Drop Finale in Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif.Tyler Jorgensen hit his first career home run and the CSU Bakersfield baseball team received a quality start from Ethan Skuija, but California Baptist defeated the Roadrunners 8-2 on Sunday afternoon in Riverside.

Jorgensen's big fly to left field led off the fifth inning and knotted the score at 1-1.  The junior third baseman struck again in the ninth as his base hit to center field scored senior catcher Jake Ortega.  For the series, he was 6-for-12 with a home run and three RBI.

Skuija (2-4) pitched well for the visitors after a tough couple of outings.  The junior tossed six innings and allowed just three hits and two runs on the day.  He also struck out six batters, which is the most in his last five starts.

Leading 3-1 in the seventh, Ryan Mota put the game out of reach for the home team with a grand slam off of Kenny Johnson.  It was a tough inning for the `Runner bullpen as Davonte Butler loaded the bases with one out. Kyle King got the next batter to flyout to center field for a sacrifice fly, but Roman Angelo walked his only batter as the Roadrunners were playing the lefty-righty matchups at the plate.  With the bases still loaded, Mota homered to left center to make it 7-1 before Johnson could escape.

Will Picketts had a single and produced one of the best defensive plays of the season in the bottom of the eighth inning.  Jesse Rowley and Jassen Oliver also had base hits for the visitors.

CSUB (15-22, 3-9 WAC) will remain on the road on Tuesday when they head to Fresno State for a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.  The Roadrunners will have a quick turnaround this week as they play Northern Colorado for a three-game WAC series beginning Thursday at Hardt Field.
