`Runners Stumble Against Kansas City

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Despite a strong pitching performance from sophomore Daryn Hitzel, the CSU Bakersfield softball team fell in its Western Athletic Conference-series opener against Kansas City on Friday. The Roadrunners outhit the Roos 7-6 on their home field, but UMKC took advantage of three CSUB errors en route to a 5-2 victory.

UMKC scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning, but CSUB rallied right back, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom half of the frame. Senior Paige Johnson delivered a one-out, RBI sacrifice fly to tie the score. The `Runners were unable to tack on more runs, but sent the game to the second inning in a 1-1 tie.

With two Roos on base, Faith Willis delivered a two-RBI double in the top of the third inning, giving UMKC a 3-1 lead. Just as they did in the first frame, the `Runners responded. After catcher Karah Wiseman stole second base, senior Nicole Curry delivered an RBI single to make the score 3-2. Curry ended up in scoring position as well, but she was stranded as CSUB was unable to equalize again.

Kansas City capitalized on a pair of CSUB errors in the top of the fourth and scored a pair of unearned runs to take a 5-2 advantage over the `Runners. While the Bakersfield offense struggled to get rolling, CSUB's starting pitcher, Hitzel, found a rhythm and recorded seven-straight outs to send the teams to the seventh inning with the same score.

CSUB freshman Avery Fitch came in to relieve in the top of the seventh and needed just nine pitches to get the `Runners to their final set of at bats. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Wiseman walked to keep Bakersfield's hopes alive, but CSUB did not move her around and fell to visiting UMKC, 5-2.

Wiseman finished the game with a pair of singles, a walk, and a stolen base while scoring both of Bakersfield's runs. Curry added a pair of hits and an RBI while Johnson drove Wiseman in for the other RBI. Junior Cydney Curran went 1-for-3 while playing a strong shortstop for the `Runners, recording six assists against UMKC.

Hitzel (4-8) took a tough loss after throwing six innings and allowing just two earned runs off six hits. Kansas City's Mia Hoveland (10-6) earned the complete-game victory while striking out five `Runners.

CSUB (13-20, 2-5 WAC) dropped the opening game of the WAC series to Kansas City (28-13, 4-6 WAC), but will return to the Roadrunner Softball Complex on Saturday with a chance to sweep the day and earn another series victory. First pitch of the twin bill is scheduled for 1 p.m. and both games will be broadcasted live via the WAC Digital Network.
