Baseball Downed in Return Home

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Playing their first home game in 16 days, the CSU Bakersfield baseball team fell to Fresno State on Wednesday night 9-3.

In the first start of his career, CSUB junior Noah Cordova (0-1) threw four scoreless frames to begin the game.  A bases loaded double by Bulldog starting pitcher McCarthy Tatum put the visitors up 3-0 in the fifth and closed the book on Cordova.

Senior Isaiah Moten came on to get the final out of the fifth and pitched a scoreless sixth, before allowing three runs in the seventh.  Fresno State took a 6-0 lead, but shouldn't have scored in the inning.  With the bases loaded and one out, Moten got a perfect double play ball that should've ended the inning, but a Roadrunner error allowed two runs to score and the next batter hit a sacrifice fly for the final tally.

The CSUB offense finally came alive with three runs of their own in the seventh.  An error by the Bulldogs on a popup from the bat of Damian Henderson allowed Jesse Rowley to come around, and Noah Barba followed with a two-run double.  Barba produced two of CSUB's three hits on the night.  Tyler Jorgensen had the `Runners' other hit.

Fresno State's J.T. Arruda hit a three-run homer in the ninth to thwart a Roadrunner comeback.  The visitors used 10 pitchers to keep the home offense off balance all evening.  Kyle Pruhsmeier picked up the win (1-0) after throwing 1.2 innings and striking out a pair.

Cordova struck out five in 4.2 innings, but was saddled with the loss.  Kyle King and Kevin Altamirano pitched scoreless innings in relief.

Next on the schedule, the Roadrunners will welcome Seattle U for a three-game series beginning Friday at 6:00 p.m.
