`Runners Fall to CBU in Extras in WAC Opener

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – For the second-straight game, the Roadrunner softball team played into extra innings. After winning an 11-inning marathon last weekend, CSU Bakersfield dropped a tough, 6-4 loss in its Western Athletic Conference opener to California Baptist on Friday.

In the top of the first, CBU put the first two runners on base. The `Runners were able to strand both in scoring position as starting pitcher Daryn Hitzel induced a ground ball to shortstop Cydney Curran to end the threat. Looking to strike again, the Lancers loaded the bases with one out in the top of the second, but Hitzel struck out the next batter before a fly ball got CSUB out of another jam.

The `Runners started the bottom of the third with a leadoff single from Nakaila Fuggs, who promptly stole second base. Curran then hit an infield single to put `Runners on the corners with no outs. Paige Johnson's squeeze bunt worked to perfection, allowing Fuggs to slide underneath the tag of the CBU's diving catcher as Bakersfield took a 1-0 lead to the fourth.

The Lancers finally got to Hitzel in the top of the fifth, putting a runner on third base with just one out before Halle Rosario recorded an RBI single to tie the score. With two outs, Brittney Galvez roped a double into the gap, scoring Rosario's pinch runner, but CSUB gunned down Galvez trying to take an extra base to limit the damage to one run.

Bakersfield responded with three runs in the bottom half of the fifth to regain the lead, 4-2. Just as they did in the third inning, Fuggs and Curran got the rally going with back-to-back singles. Johnson, a senior third baseman who also played great defense on Friday, laid down a sacrifice bunt that put both `Runners in scoring position. Freshman Samantha Pech delivered with a two-RBI single before senior Nicole Curry hit a line drive double to the bottom of the wall, scoring Pech's pinch runner, Arianna Felix, and capping CSUB's scoring.

California Baptist led off the top of the sixth with a pair of singles before a sacrifice bunt put two runners in scoring position. The Lancers plated one run on a fielder's choice before an RBI single put CBU ahead by two runs. The pair of runs tied the game and the two teams wound eventually find themselves in extra innings after a scoreless seventh frame.

CBU managed to plate two runs in the top of the eighth on an RBI single and a sacrifice fly. With the `Runners down to their final three outs, Curry hit a one-out single to give CSUB some life, but Bakersfield was unable to rally and fell, 6-4.

Freshman Avery Fitch (0-3) took the loss for CSUB after throwing 2.2 innings in relief and only allowing two hits to the Lancers. Hitzel, a sophomore lefty, earned a no decision after 5.1 innings of work and four runs allowed.

Curran, Curry, and Fuggs each tallied a pair of hits on Friday to lead Bakersfield's offense to eight hits against CBU's Kellye Springstead, who earned a complete-game victory. Pech went 1-for-4 from the plate and recorded two of CSUB's four RBI in the game.

The `Runners (8-13, 0-1 WAC) and Lancers (14-15, 1-0 WAC) will return to the Roadrunner Softball Complex on Saturday to close out the WAC-opening series with a doubleheader. First pitch on Saturday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
