CSUB Prepares to Open WAC Play with CBU at Home

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – Western Athletic Conference play has arrived for CSU Bakersfield's softball team as the Roadrunners are preparing to host their first league series of the 2019 season. This weekend, the newest member of the WAC, California Baptist, will come to Bakersfield for a three-game series, Mar. 22-23, at the Roadrunner Softball Complex.

"We're excited to start WAC play, especially against CBU," said Crissy Buck-Ziegler, CSUB's eighth-year Head Coach. "They have a great program and we're excited to have them in our conference for their inaugural season. We are hoping to continue the momentum we had from San Diego into this weekend."

California Baptist (13-15) joined the WAC this year as the Lancers began their transition to NCAA Division I. In what has already been a solid start to the season, CBU has posted wins against strong teams including Fresno State, UC Santa Barbara, and CSUN.

The Lancers boast a potent offense that features five different student-athletes batting over .300 on the season. Senior Halle Rosario leads the way, combining average (.375) with power (four home runs, .563 slugging percentage). In the circle, CBU has only used three pitchers this season while one of those three has only thrown 16.1 innings. Kellye Springstead (11-8) earns the majority of time in the circle and has a 2.55 ERA on the year.

CSUB and CBU have only met twice in the two programs' histories. The `Runners took each of the first two meetings, which were played in 1992 and 2002, and Bakersfield will be looking to take a 3-0 lead with a win in the first game in over 15 years.

The WAC-opening series kicks off on Friday, Mar. 22, at the Roadrunner Softball Complex. The `Runners and Lancers will play a single game at 2 p.m. to open the series before closing it out on Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.

Friday's game will be streamed live on the WAC Digital Network while live stats will be available for all three games. Links to both options of following the action are available on the CSUB softball schedule page and live updates will be shared all weekend @CSUB_Softball on Twitter (link above).
